BlackBerrys save images as JPEG. My guess is you operator is conveniently converting it into a format you don't want. The operator is probably down sampling the image too since Windows bitmap (BMP) is a lossless format. A full sized BMP image will be MUCH larger on disk than the same sized JPEG image.

If you connect the phone to your computer with the USB cable that came with the phone you can mount the phone's disk as another drive. Then just drag the JPEG files to computer's hard disk. Personally I mount my phone's disk on my Mac and import the images directly from the phone into Aperture.

Aaah, good to know. Now to find that USB cable I never used before.
That will make it easier for the future.
