Another thing to think about is what do you mainly shoot? Are you a portrait or wedding photographer? Do you shoot a ton of landscapes and make a living selling HUGE prints of those landscapes? I think this is important to think about.
If you are out shooting landscapes and want to make GIANT prints, go with the D800. The resolution on that camera makes for a lot of leeway in cropping as well as having all the information you could possibly need to print some giant photos. If you are doing weddings or portraits or whatever else, go with the D700. Plenty of data there for those jobs. And don't get me wrong, I know the D700 is a fantastic landscape camera. One of the best out there. But if that is your focus and you are looking to get another rig, you may as well go with the best you can get for the job. Where as I think the D800 is pretty much overkill for the majority of people and what they shoot. Just my two cents...
