Badlands 2012 Part One
I stopped at the Badlands for a few days while on a bike trip to Minnesota. This was my first time visiting the park, it felt like a different world. Huge sandstone/dirt outcroppings everywhere and 100+ degree temps.
I hiked the area for a few hours after arriving, then hit the sack for a full day of hiking/climbing in the morning. Camera used is the Pentax K20D. I used an assortment of lenses, the Super Takumar 28mm F3.5, SMC Takumar 55mm F1.8, Takumar 135mm F3.5 Preset and Tele-Takumar 200mm F5.6 Preset. This is Part One. I'll post Part Two shortly (after I go through and post process the better photos). ![]() Badlands-28-June-2012-1 by Colorado CJ, on Flickr Just a shot of the bike before heading off to a hike. ![]() Badlands-28-June-2012-2 by Colorado CJ, on Flickr ![]() Badlands-28-June-2012-3 by Colorado CJ, on Flickr The lighting changes drastically over the day here. Clouds, dust and the sun work together to bring out some very strange lighting. ![]() Badlands-28-June-2012-4 by Colorado CJ, on Flickr Very nice roads through the park. Fun on the bike, but the scenery is too good to just ride. ![]() Badlands-28-June-2012-5 by Colorado CJ, on Flickr Back at camp and cooking at sunset. Doesn't cool off until very late in the evening. Should have brought a different bag (I only packed my Marmot -20 degree bag) The sunsets here are to die for ![]() Badlands-28-June-2012-6 by Colorado CJ, on Flickr Well that's it for Part One. I might have some time tomorrow to post process the rest of the images. I'll post Part Two as soon as they are finished. Hope you like them! |

Very nice. Makes me go back to when I rode through in 2006 after the Sturgis rally. I unfortunately was limited on time for the return trip home and went straight through with one stop for water. 110+ that day...merciless. Used a quart of oil because of the heat. But...the vistas were to die for. I would love to see the sunrise there.

This is a great bunch of pictures. I live right beside the North Dakota version of the Badlands, and I don't take advantage of it the way I should. You really captured these exotic formations -- so well I could tell you were in the South Dakota version.
What I really appreciate is how well you captured the SIZE of the Badlands. |
