Can geotagging be added using Lightroom 4 map?
Lightroom 4 has a map module with which you can add GPS co-ordinates to images.

When I republish the photos (using the Smugmug plugin for Lightroom) I don't get the pictures on the Smugmug map.

Is there something extra that has to be done to make Smugmug use these for geotagging?

Try right clicking on SmugMug in the Publishing Services section, and selecting Settings. In the republishing section, make sure the GPS box is checked here (see screenshot). That should make sure that any GPS data you add to your images is published when you re-publish. if you don't see that option appear in the republishing settings, make sure you have the most recent version of the plugin. You can get that here if you need it. Hope this helps!

The GPS box was already ticked. Is there anything else I can check?

For the gallery settings,
Geography = Yes
Privacy = Public
Hide Owner = No

I'm not at my Lightroom computer right now so can't check exact setting names/values.. But by default the Lightroom 4 publication plug ins strip "Location Info" for privacy reasons. This is what's preventing Map This from working.

Go into the settings for the SmugMug publication plugin, and look for an option in there about removing location data. Uncheck that, republish your photos, and they should show up correctly in the online SM map.

Yep, it was checked for me by default as well:

Unchecking that box should do the trick.
