Increase size of thumbnails in Smugmug Gallery style

Is there a way to increase the size of the thumbnails in my galleries? Perhaps by having fewer thumbnails in each row? Likewise, to increase the size of the larger individual photo to the right of the thumbnails?

I'd like to see this too (perhaps this could be moved to Feature Requests). I don't know if it's theme dependent but my thumbs are a little on the small side in Smugmug Gallery style and were definitely bigger in legacy. They could be half as big again, almost.

    Hi Tony,

I can see that you are using the SmugMug style in one of your galleries:

It looks like you are adding 200px of margin of each side of your gallery - please see my screenshot:

This is causing your gallery to appear smaller. I would recommend that you remove the margin or reduce the margin to something smaller than 200px. That should make the thumbnails and the main photo appear larger.

Changing the size or removing the margins does nothing to the actual thumbnail size...it just moves them around on the page. Is there a way to actually increase the pixel dimensions of the thumbnails?

There isn't an option provided by smug to control the size of the thumbs.

but it seems they'll happily give you advise on your margins and ignore the actual question :)

Is anyone at Smugmug ever going to even acknowledge this problem?

Just a note: size/count of the thumbnails varies depending on browser window size / fullscreen mode.

I also tried Landscapes and i get 2x4 or 4x4 thumbs. Depends on my browser window or if i got to fullscreen. The size of the thumbs also varies. If i make my browser window smaller the thumbs get smaller too.

So the size of the thumbs is not fixed... and what you see may be different from the visitors view of your galleries...

This isn't a problem per say. This is the way the gallery is designed. I do think exploring that option of being able to change the thumbnail size is a good idea. I will add to the Feature Request forum.

    I disagree..

It's not strictly a bug, but it is definitely a problem - and it's been mentioned numerous times right from when new Smugmug first went live.

It seems like such a deliberate choice by Smugmug - can we not get a proper reply to this?

We can customise the exact same thing on Pages, and Folder pages, just not in galleries, they are locked down.

This isn't just a feature request - it is a question - WHY is it like this? Crippling the most important pages of our sites - the ones that show off our photography!

I don't really want yet another "thanks, we'll keep you updated", I have a list of threads like that already (mostly on clear cut bugs)

Oh, and it's already in the Feature Request Forum - raised nearly 3 months ago - http://dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=237827

This has not changed at all since Legacy. The style looks alot cleaner, but the size of the thumbnails has not changed. However we classify it, it still needs to be investigated and discussed internally to determine if it will be implemented.

Michael, are you absolutely sure about that?

Have a look at the New/Legacy comparison overlay image that Allen constructed, posted at http://dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=1920746&postcount=3, and at the New/Legacy comparative pair of pics at http://dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=1920841&postcount=9

The NewSM thumbnails (and indeed the NewSM main images) there look significantly smaller to me ne_nau.gif

    What say you now?

It's those stupid R/L page chevrons that take up so much space that's not allowing the main image to enlarge.

... and the bottom page nav is a joke.

Thanks you....now that's what I was looking for...I will investigate. Allen, what is the link to the gallery you were referring too?

If you really want to differentiate - then i'd update your new thread to be clearer 'Smugmug gallery' sounds pretty generic since everything is a smugmug gallery :)

Anyway, yes this thread is about the 'Smugmug style' galleries, I didn't realise it made much difference - but I guess it does. Why it is more frustrating for the collage style is because you have the other types of page which allow you to configure the size, spacing and title location using the same layout style (collage) so you end up with custom pages and folder pages looking just how you want, but you are unable to change the galleries themselves. If you want to keep this thread to the smugmug style - then please comment on one of the many other threads that are seemingly ignored on the subject of other gallery styles.

I found the other thread. I commented on that. We can keep the conversation to that thread. Thanks!

I had a look to a legacy site (this one here) and looked at the site fullscreen. The thumbs on the left have a size of 152x152px. If i go to my site and open a smugmug gallery fullscreen the thumbs have a size of 136x136px on a 20" monitor (1680x1050).

If i open the page inside of a browser window the thumbs on the bird gallery have a size of 102x102px. My own gallery is about 87x87px.

It depends on the display size but the thumbs are smaller... about 10 to 15 percent or about 16px. Therefore i have 20 thumbs on my page but only 15 on the legacy site.

For sure i don't want to have always larger thumbs. Navigating through a gallery with 400 or more images may take a long time with 4 large thumbs (or 9 medium or 16 small sized thumbs). Yes you get larger thumbs but you will have more pages to walk through...

I don't like the idea of a fixed size, but maybe SM could allow to select between small, medium or large.

I like that idea too. I will submit the request with those parameters.

    Thanks!

Is there any word on whether there is a plan to implement this option? It would be helpful to know for future planning.
