Here are three simple tutorials we hope will encourage you to try something new.

The Hot Seat

A lifelong interest in landscape photography has led Eyal Oren to make a study of his adopted hometown of Marblehead, MA. As you can see, his dedication is paying off!

Nikon D90 Lens Choice
Hi

My wife is a very good amateur photographer but still has the original lens which came with her D90 which i believe is an 18-105 all round lens.

Im wanting to buy her a more specific lens for either Macro or Landscape. I can only afford one!!

Im after a good quality one which will also work with the internal autofocus and also with manual. Id prefer to have a nice fit with a compatable lens without going down the route of having an adaptor.

Im not a photographer nor have i done alot of research as to be quite Frank i cant get my head around all the numbers and what they mean so i gave up before i got too confused.

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Regards

Honestly you have a great lens for landscape with the 18-105, its one of the sharper lenses that Nikon makes. Get her the 60mm 2.8 Macro for more detailed shots. I have shot with the 18-105mm a lot and love the results. If you have the extra money get her a 35mm 1.8 which is a tack sharp prime lens that makes some stunning images.

Greetings and welcome to DGRIN...

If you get her a micro/macro lens, I would suggest you tell her and get her on-board with your purchase. She the one who will be using it, so a bad purchase by you will not be good. Don't know if Brits have "dog houses" for men...

Macro glass can go from 24mm to 200mm. All depends on how close to the subject you WANT to be. Insects/bugs usually will not stick around if you get to close, so a longer macro would be suggested in cases like this. 105+MM. I have the 60mm Nikkor and can tell you it's tack sharp. Also makes a good general purpose lens, but really shines up-close and personal. Sample images can be seen at the links below... (I prefer a longer lens for macro, BTW)

AF Nikkor 60/2.8 micro...

And so you're aware, many (if not most) who are serious about macro, use a tripod, focus the lens manually and have a remote shutter release. Guess I'm saying that there is MUCH more to macro than just getting a good lens. I also have an older manual focus (only) 105mm f/4 Micro-Nikkor that I prefer. Sample images below...

MF Micro-Nikkor 105/4...

Hope this helps...
