I don't have much. I guess I just like taking photos with color. This is all I could come up with... not exactly black and white...

1. What's up?

2. Snowy Bushes

3. Follow the leader

I came to this site with the intent of challenging (and humbling) myself and looking at some of these photographs it's clear that I certainly came to the right place. I'm extremely impressed at how much extraordinary work is entered in these challenges almost "casually" . Well... back to the lenses with me!

I pretty much said the same thing the first time I posted - on the sunsets challenge ...

"Wow ... an astonishingly high standard in here.
I'm too ashamed to put anything in! "

but was encouraged by Skippy77 and decided it is only a bit of fun and I love looking at and learning from other photos.

Keep posting

Alan.

PS - I think ALXCAR is going to have a tough time choosing - as always some lovely shots in here - I think the cats win!!! (Oh and maybe one or two of the birds too!)

Thanks, red_zone. Both the (albino) peacock and the adobe bricks with the inset whachamacallit were taken in Carlsbad, California at the Leo Carillo Ranch Park. It's a cool little rancho turned city park with wild peacocks and several historical early California adobe structures. The adobe sculpture might be considered a type of "bas relief" or "counter relief." What made it photograph so well was the layers and layers of white paint on the original adobe bricks and the bright harsh daylighting on the wall.

This is probably not a well-known local for tourists in San Diego County, but it's worth at trip if your in the area.

By the way, I really like the way the cat in the next post appears to be looking up at the peacock

That’s my Shadow. She likes the birds - all birds. If I remember that shot correctly, she was sitting in the window looking up at a bird on the eave of my house. So, if she seems to be looking at the peacock, it fits. She would really, really love to meet the peacock.

Bill, I like all your entries, but the peacock is the one that really caught my eye.

Hi all,

First, It has been a pleasure and a good fun to be the host of the Mini-challenge #153: Black and white in full color.

Very well done to all of you.

It was a misunderstanding at the beginning on what to do. this challenge was, for you to have a good eye to see a potential B/W picture on the REAL world.
Black and white pictures are a photography technique, as it could be the X ray photography, Ultraviolet Photography... As well, post production edited photography on computer such HDR, 3D... or on in a dark room. An many other technologies and techniques.
All are "unnatural" pictures. The real world, as the human's eye can see it, is in full colour (of course with the exceptions).

So, the challenge was set up for FULL colour BUT with the appearance of a Black and White picture, with no conversion to B/W.

It has been very hard to decide.
Here are my favourites that all get a nomination

All are beautiful pictures

Again, well done!

I love the shadow and the way the cracks in the wall are separating the top to the button.
A good composition and a good technique.

This picture took me a wile to see it. The composition is good as it incorporate a spark from the sun and the detail of the monks... and to get all that look B/W... really a very good piece of work.

The reason I have picked this picture, is not for the quality. It goes with the rules of this challenge and is a very difficult shot to do, (I imagine that all happened very quickly),and the clever crop, giving space to the top right to give us the sensation of the aggressor bird is coming fast from above.

An image that I could imaging framed and in a wall or on the pages of a nature magazine.

Very well done.

PS.- the were other better pictures but did not follow with the rules of this challenge.

Well done to jwear, the two runners up and great shots from everyone.

Also well done to superduckz who expressed being humbled in here yet I think got two shots in the final 10!

Alan.

ALXCAR - Well done, but I think you've not entirely followed the usual "admin" style for these comps ... no worries, but I will PM you with some pointers. jwear ... by the number of posts you've made you look like an "old" hand, if not I would suggest a visit to the comp guidelines which are usually included in the first post opening up a new mini - competition. Have a look at the previous competition to see the guidelines.

As the new kid around here just wanted to say it's an honor to even have my photos on the consideration list with such outstanding competition and that the winner is very well deserving. It's a remarkable photo. Well... I do believe that I have the challenge bug now! Thanks!

ALXCAR first I will say thank you and then I was really blown away at who won .I agree with what you said 100% my shot was not the best but what you said about my shot is why I posted that shot . I did not read all the posts that it should be more 'out of the camera' and no PS . Thank you again for the kind words getting that shot was prefocus and knowing what they were going to do beforre it took place .3 frames in less than a second it was over .

Hi jwear,

First off, well done! Also, really well done to ALXCAR for running a very interesting but quite tricky to run competition theme.

A couple of things I pointed via a friendly PM to ALXCAR are …

It is usual to post a copy of the guidelines with the first post when opening a new competition, and although I equally missed it until now, it was not done on this competition. These guidelines are incredibly useful for beginners, or recent beginners like me, who stumble across these competitions for the first time. Also, newbies like me, if they win, might follow the template of what the last person has done, and I think it helpful if this “template” or “format” is not lost. I see you have it covered though.

Much less important I suspect - the guidelines (I don’t know why) suggest that at the end of the competition a single post closes the competition thread and the results are announced on a separate thread.

4. After the time/date has passed, then officially close the thread with a single post notifying everyone of the fact.

5. After you're finished judging, start a new thread (again using the prior formats) and post your Winner and runners-up.

It was not done this way until I sent a PM.

In this light, and as ALXCAR is new (just slightly newer than me anyway!), I also mentioned the need to PM you to announce the win just in case it was missed.

As I said in my post, “no worries”, I’m just trying to keep the “format” intact and perhaps help ensure newcomers know what to do.

Alan.
