If you want to be in business, you shouldn't need to be wet-nursed by a company. The company provides TOOLS. Use them in a smart way. Everything on your list is something that is set and chosen by the account owner, either by account settings or the level of plan chosen.

    Village idiot? Hm.

this is an absolute cop out and you know it......a proactive paid host should have their clients security as their first and utmost concern....all security should be set to the highest level, even if that means the client has to log in to DISABLE WHAT THEY NEED TO DISABLE...Not one thing should be OPT OUT....that is simply BAD BUSINESS no matter how you look at it...

When I put my images in a gallery i expect that Gallery OWNER (the HOST) to have my images secured so they do not get stolen...but in your way of thinking I should travel around my state making sure all the galleries have their doors locked at night so my images are secure.....
    WRONG.....

making nothing up...simply making a point that forever how long this printing fiasco has been happening that there could be millions of images bought as cards...copied....uprezed and being sold as some other person art work.....not making anything up....it is a very viable scenario whether you, Andy or any other person at SMUGMUG wants to admit to it and as pointed I have taken some of my older film work that was 4x6 inches copied with my 8mp Konica Minolta A2 and printed fantastic 40 x 60's that have a ZERO need for viewing distance as they have no noise in the image that was uprezed with Genuine Fractals......so I am not making up anything to just get mad about...there is absolutely no need for that....but ai am putting a scenario out there for any of those this might have affected to let them know what could have been happening with there images and unfortunately if the one selling these images did it right he/she will have shot the copy in raw and at a very low iso and very large aperture so the pores of the paper is not pick up by the sensor..... there is enuff crap in this world that one can upset over without me having to make things up....just off the top of my head those crappy pricelist, the foreign currency offering....no Paypal intergration.....

We're going to agree to disagree.

I accept that what you outline is possible. I would suggest that essentially no-one has done it in the real world. Not only wouldn't it have happened "millions and millions" of times, but Genuine Fractals (or any of the multitude of uprezzing solutions available) are just clever ways of making up data that don't offend thine eyes. Clearly you're a HUGE fan (given your tagline) of GF, but it's just another program making up data.

And I don't need foreign currency or Paypal integration anymore - I added my own Paypal solution to my Smugmug site. Works better for me and my customers than the built in shopping cart!

Don't get upset, find a solution.

The "highest level" would be to make all uploads invisible, and when made visible, make them available in the smallest possible size with the MOST intrusive watermark possible, with right click disabled on the page, using gimmicks to obfuscate the URL with transparent overlays etc.

    No. That's _stupid_

Smugmug not only has to take regular users into account who want a hassle free way to upload and share (and bear in mind most users DON'T CARE if people take their photos) but also have a way of protecting the images of those that do care.

I regularly and happily abuse Smugmug when they deserve it, but in this case you're being ridiculously unreasonable... Professional users (or any users concerned about others stealing their images) should take responsibility for setting the tool up correctly, or preferably lock the only copies of the images up in a fireproof safe, seal it in concrete and then drop it into the Challenger Deep of the Mariana Trench. At least that way there's no chance anyone will steal it and print a 40*60 from your images.

Possibly stupid, but IMHO SmugMug has been guilty far too often of automatically OPTing IN everyone on new features, often time with no way to OPT OUT.

I don't honestly think it's unreasonable to make images for the lower tier accounts non-printable by default until enabled by the owner since the owner gets absolutely ZERO communication from SmugMug if/when an image is sold.

I also agree that EVERYONE should have the ability to put custom watermarks on their images. That feature shouldn't be ON by default, but it should be available.

yes we are going to disagree....not sure how you can say it wouldn't have happened in the real world...no one knows if it did happen....smugmug can't even tell anyone how many cards were printed off the popular galleries....so yes it could have happened....and it may have happened ..... but no one can say definitively it did not happen.....

for just another program that makes up data it has won tons of awards for being the BEST AT UPREZING .... and yes I am a fan...I have used it since way before Lizzard Tech sold it to OnOne.....

Very glad you have no need for foreign currency cause I spent my 1st yr having to email people in the Czech Republic, Germany, Latvia, south Africa, and Tanzania just to name a few with prices converted off of XE currency converter and links to it...it was a real pain in the ass but I bend over backwards for my clients.....as as to PayPal...i just send invoices now ...it took me a long time to get print weights and shipping costs for my foreign clients but I have done it and they were happy so all is good as a matter of fact I am shipping out 2 books and 20 signed 8x10's to Jince Czech Republic this week ... so I am good on this also ... ....

    SO YES WE DISAGREE
you're happy with SM a lot of us are not...as to finding a solution....it is done...........

Even if you're reading my replies, I don't think you're understanding them

I am _NOT_ completely happy with Smugmug. I am unhappy about parts of the service offering and the pricing plans. I am unhappy with the development lead time on new features and I am unhappy about the US centric approach they deny they have.

I have made Smugmug work very well for me despite these issues and they have some unique features not available ANYWHERE else short of developing and maintaining my own site.

However, taking the opportunity to snipe at a tiny bug as if they organised the theft of The Scream from the Munch Museum is petty.

Because John was a dope and didn't take responsibility to protect his own IP and set up his store properly.
Well since john is a lower tier member he does not have a store on this site. Also john did do all of the security measures but the people were still able to magically order the stock. This because the owners of the property where john has his things decided that there did not need to be good locks. Or more aptly that the owner decided that johns stock was for his to have access to as he wished.

So you missed the bit where this bug was acknowledged and fixed then?

I invite you to plainly and clearly say you think Smugmug planned and did this deliberately to their user - because that's what you are trying to infer with your reply above - but saying it clearly would make you look like an idiot.

I turned big brother/skynet (Google) off years ago.

The people I want to view my images know how to find them without a search engine.

Those images will all be re-indexed in the real near future, if they have not been already..so no I do not worry about that too much.... ... ....I also notify many people of changes to my site....

won't be a big splash I dive much better than that.. ... ...
