Problem with video players quality
Hi all,
Has smugmug made recent changes to the video player? It seems to be defaulting to 640 and if displayed full screen the video looks crap. Some of my videos have the option to change the quality ie 360 480 640 720p 1080p etc however not all are displaying this. Just wondering if anybody has thoughts comments they would like to share Thanks Bernard Pearson Photography | Video | VFX www.bernardpearson.com bernard@bernardpearson.com |

Hi Bernard,
There's an issue with the new video player not showing a size selection if the gallery is password protected. While the issue is being worked on, as a temporary workaround you could give out / use the lightbox link for videos in such galleries. To get a lightbox link, use the share button > get a link > gallery links tab. Copy the lightbox link from there and use that for the time being. I'm sorry for any inconvenience.

I am also not happy with the video quality. The old player somehow provided a sharper image.
What I "hate" (such a strong word, but yes...) is that, in fullscreen mode, he scales the video to fit the whole screen. Vimeo (as an example) has a button to limit the size to 100%. That i very smart. Because I would love to view my 720p video in 720p size. Not possible for me (besides the workaround with the lightbox link, but try to explain that to your viewers...). Please keep working on the video player. All the best, Jan

What's your screen / browser window size? The video size playing by default depends on the size of your screen / browser window. On a smaller screen, you'll get the 640 px video size (which is played back slightly larger so it's not that small of a video), but if you have a larger screen that fits the 720p size along side the thumbnails, we would show that at it's original resolution. Note that if you resize your browser window, you have to refresh the gallery for the video player to load again. If you want a larger video size to play, you can also manually choose that via the size selector in the bottom right of the player.

Hello Sebastian,
I am talking about the fullscreen mode. And in fullscreen it is now always "fullscreen". 720p is blown up to 1680x1050 (my monitor resolution). If I make my browser window larger, and reload the site, then it shown a slightly bigger video on the right side. True. But the video on the right is in my case either around 450 or around 580 pixel height (larger browser window). Thats no 1:1 resolution! See what I mean? /Jan

There are actually two issues here, both irritating!
1. As already pointed out, if the gallery is protected, you don't get any quality options (I've only noticed the new player with a resolution setting instead of the simple "HD" option). Unprotecting the gallery restores the resolution options. 2. As mentioned by Green Hornet, I get a different, arguably more annoying issue: if I play a 1280x720 video clip on my secondary monitor which is 1600x1200 4:3 aspect ratio, not only is the video stretched to fill the vertical resolution (so no 1:1 mapping), it crops off the sides! So my 1280x720 video is now cropped to 960x720 and stretched to fill the vertical resolution of my screen. Please fix this ASAP |

yes, I have to agree that I've wasted a whole lot of time trying to figure out why my video player is not displaying 480,720, etc. and I finally found this thread here.
But yes, this issue is extremely annoying and irritating and I hope that it is fixed soon. When I joined SmugMug Pro, I did not know I was going to be dealing with these annoying problems. |

Has this issue been fixed yet? My video quality still looks horrible.

I have 1080p videos but the view can only go up 640p on galleries without password protected. Not sure why this is happening? I remember we used to have 1080p...

I too have been patiently waiting for this problem to be fixed (the problem I refer to is the original problem reported here - lack of a video size selector in password protected galleries). Does Smugmug have a projected date when this bug will be corrected?
