Country club wedding, with dance photos (second shooter)

I shot second on this one, for Shudderz. This is now my 5th wedding and I must admit, I truly LOVE this job! Now I just need to find a way to do it more often...

(anyone need a second?)

Summary: Country Club setting, outdoor ceremony w/harsh light, indoor reception with LOW ambient light(focus issues on my D700!), and very fun, even lower light, dance party!

Interesting fact: I shot this event with one lens....any guesses?

Love them!!! I can't believe you are still shooting second! Ok, so you got me-- which was the one lens? I'm thinking 70 mm or something. I now you shoot Nikon though and they do have that killer 50mm. --Lisa

I second that wow. These are great! I really like the processing on the reception photos - great tones there. Willing to share any of your processing secrets?

Was the lens a prime? 85mm maybe?

Josh, I know I have said thank you many times.....but once again...THANK YOU

I have another wedding this weekend, and it's just not going to be the same without you.

I receive nothing but the best compliments from people when you're working with me. I don't have to worry about wether or not you're going to get the shot. I feel perfectly confident in letting you run with an idea, and set up shots. I give you much more creative freedom than anyone else that has ever shot with me....AND...I have a lot of fun shooting with you. I think we work really well together.

On top of the amazing job you've done on the photos, it also is important to me that you value giving back. Being able to give back thru my business is huge for me, and being able to work with someone that shares that value is great.

To those that have questioned why you're shooting second....
Josh responded to a post I placed in the For Hire thread. I needed someone to shoot second with me for this wedding. I was fortunate enough to have him work another wedding two weeks prior with me as well. I look forward to the next time I get to work with Josh.

(There's something to be said about shooting second tho......you get to have all the fun, turn over the files, not have to worry about all the overhead, processing, etc. You get to process the ones you want to, because just that...you want to.

Shudderz: Thank you for the kind words! And I truly do enjoy shooting second for you. The creative latitude you give me is awesome, and really makes for a fun event.

Giving back to the community and the world around is important. I feel it has renewed that vision I had when I first got into photography. You know, that cliche idea that we photogs get in our head: "impact the world through my photos"......well, it is now very true in my case and it is the most rewarding of all my work.

Everyone else: (Drumroll)...........the lens of the evening was......NIKON 50MM 1.4 G

(on my D700, full-frame body)

So far as processing, I would love to share. I started with RAW, 12-Bit, Lossless-Compressed files. I shot most everything with the UNIWB white balance preset. This allowed me to really maximize the dynamic range of my sensor, and seems to make finding the perfect neutral WB a little easier. My post technique goes like this: Get the white balance PERFECT, crush the blacks and bring a little back with fill light, dodge/burn, adjust Hue of red/orange channels, bump luminosity of both, and end with a little split toning.....then...adjust the exposure the far right, and turn up the recovery to tone down the skin highlights.

I actually outsourced the video slideshow to a group of laborers that live on a cloud in the Amazon.

They are highly efficient and did a great job.

Wow great job. Everything is great including the video.

I couldn't imagine making that video by hand on after effects, it would take forever. What did you use to put it together?

Honestly, this is what I did....

(I "may" be speaking symbolically, so think outside the box)

That is great. I was just telling my wife how I thought those two shots complimented each other really well. I was already envisioning a really cool 2-page album spread.

I may be old school but it bothers me a bit that a professional photographer would show up at such a formal affair dressed as if he were going to hang out with the guys for the evening. What you wear is your work uniform and it should fit the occasion. Your appearance can say alot about you in this business. That aside, your photos were very good and I agree that you would do well to start shooting as the primary. Sorry if I drifted off track abit but I could.nt help myself, you stood out like a sore thumb.

Do you sell your videos to the clients or do you include it in, as a "package deal"?
I usually just upload the hi-res version in the gallery, free-of-charge, as a surprise, then charge for an iso-file burned DVD if they want it. Once they see the video online, they usually want 4-6 copies of the DVDs.

These are great, I agree you need to be out there doing more weddings on your own! I'm sure between the two of you the bride is going to be blown away w/ the quality of shots you both took

So far I have just incorporated them into the shoot as a free perk. I like the idea of the free web version and DVD's for sale.

Thanks for letting me know which ones were your favorites! In time, I will spread my entreprenurial wings and become a full time photographer like some of you. For now, being the best second shooter around is my goal. It gives me the opportunity to build a nice portfolio; one that will make a pretty decent splash when I make the jump. Also, my experience as a second will help me direct my future second shooters in the best way possible.

A few weeks back i decided to buy my first flash. Until now I have never even used an on camera strobe. I have always found a way to make the natural light work well for me(especially with the D700). But, knowing I had a few low light events coming up I need a reliable, modifiable light source. It had to be powerful, super simple, and VERY small. The off camera SB-400 setup was THE perfect fit. It is tiny, weighs nothing, and has manual & iTTL control via my D700. The recycle time is way faster than advertised, too. It runs off two AA's that last well past 200-400 pops. Although, I replace at about 150-200 to keep it in it's prime.

The video blows my mind!

You've taken the usually blaze' "and here's the bride with her 3rd cousin....." and turned it upside down! Talk about set the standard!!
