Brand New to all this - I have no clue where to start HELP!
Ok - excited to get this going, I have managed to figure out how to get the full screen slideshow which I like but well that's about it I have no clue how to search for things in here as I don't know the lingo, but can usually follow instructions pretty well. I have photos ready to create galleries but I want to get as much of the coding and scripting figured out first before I go uploading all these galleries.

FIRST: I want to know how do I keep people from looking at my site right now until I can get the right stuff up how I want it etc?

I really would love it if someone could just help stear me in the right direction. I know EXACTLY what I want to have my page look like, I just have no freaking clue how or where to start in order to do it.

I have been told by everyone who suggested SmugMug to me that this is a great community of helpers, someone reach out and help me!

Hi Bradford,

To keep people from looking at your site right now, you can set a site-wide password on the account so that nobody can view without knowing the password.

http://www.smugmug.com/help/site-security

If you can give us links to examples of what you're looking for, we can probably get you going in the right direction. :)

Ok should I start small or just put everything all out at once?

I haven't finished designing my logo yet so I won't start with wanting to figure out where to have it and all that. So how bout this.

I have the homepage slideshow. Now how do I put down in like the right hand corner (as that seems to be where it typically is) an icon button, specifically either ones that look like this
http://www.designkindle.com/2011/10/27/socialis/
or this
http://www.designdeck.co.uk/a/1239

I need "icon buttons" (ooh some terminology stuff would help too...should I make a list of that?) for
- Facebook Fan Page
- Twitter
- Instagram (if that is possible to allow them to subscribe to mine of those too...)
- Model Mayhem (though I don't see any icons for it...how do I work around that?)

As those buttons would link to my respecitve pages, how do I also make it possible for my galleries to have the ability to be "liked" on like facebook, the google version of that, all the networks, and where can I view those details?

I know what kind of drop down menus I want to so i'll tackle that next, as well as font and style of the menus and stuff but this should be a good start ya?

- LinkedIn (still debating on this one)

Ok the other thing I haven't been able to find is any suggestions for keeping all this coding stuff I am placing in "clean" - like what's an easy suggestion now that I have the full screen slideshow homepage - how do I know where one starts one ends? I know this sounds kind of silly, but I am just trying to be proactive in case I want to change this drop down menu later or tweak it...

Is it just as easy as putting in some line breaks? Can I type something in above it so I can easily tell what it is if it isn't obvious?

Ok so I am looking to have a drop down menu that operates like this one
http://www.ibarraphoto.com/ - I have also noticed the slideshow on my page does not transition anywhere near as smoothly as the ibarra one. Is that because my files are very large or something else?

I want the menu to come up from the bottom left instead of from the top and to be semi transparent with black letters (or at least see how that looks for starters) like how the menu on www.richardsilverphoto.com.

I will hold off for now on what I want within the menu and how I want each page to operate with their galleries. I am wanting to have an About page, just a spot with plain text and a photo of me. Another will be for galleries, that will sub menu into a few options (and will have the ability to add more to each whenever I create a new gallery?). I want to have another one that will be for Clients to go to. When they click it I want it to go to like a Thumbnail menu page I guess. It will have each client I work with gallery in there. Each gallery will be password protected, however they won't be prompted for a password when they click the "Client" button in the menu, only when they want to view their galleries.

I want to also have like on the richardsilverphoto.com page, the little icons down in the right hand corner for someone to have the ability to email me (either it goes to a new window fill out form or their email client opens up a new message with my designated email in the "to" box - whatever is easier I don't care). Additionally for those icons I want it to link to my facebook fanpage, and another to my twitter, modelmayhem, and if possible instagram too.

http://blog.vivantvie.com/links/ - has buttons for MM so I know it can happen, just don't know where. Or If I can find another one that works better would also be fine.

I have no clue how tall of an order this is but I am up for it if I can find the necessary guidance. I feel a lot of this is hard to explain through type so I am game to Skype with someone for help too if it is easier. Or figure out something like that.

If you want to keep your code areas clean, I highly suggest using comment markers. Use them to separate the sections of your code. In CSS /* */ symbols are used.

For example:

/* THIS SECTION CONTAINS BLAH BLAH BLAH CODE */

and at the end of the code section, you can:

/* THIS ENDS THIS SECTION OF CODE */

or something to that effect.

Good luck on your site!

Ok I went to create a contact thing from teh first of those two links and now the slideshow isn't working and nothing shows up at all. Is this because I don't have my navbar made yet? Ugh is there a way for someone to "check my work" at points? I have no clue now how to revert back wtihout starting over...

One way is to remove the code that you added.
A better way is to email all your code to yourself before you make a change. Near the bottom of the Customisation page is a button to do this. If things go belly up you can replace the code with the code you had before the change.

If you want anyone to look at your site to help identify any problems we will need a link to your site. Please add it to your signature so it is always available to the helpers here. Click the clipboard on the navbar above, then Edit Signature. Begin your link with http:// to make it clickable.

Your slideshow is working for me. Keep in mind that with the slideshow in place but without a navbar a visitor can't navigate anywhere on your site.

To get the contact form working, first you need to set up a contact address. Go to the control panel, click the Pros tab, and set up (and confirm) the Customer contact email.

Once you have done that the contact link in your footer will work. Keep in mind that you need to be viewing your site from a browser where you are not logged in to see the contact window that your viewers will see.

Once you have the customer contact email set up you can also use that contact form from a navbar entry by following the instructions in the thread Pros can insert their own Contact Links.

You can always check your own work by viewing your site in a browser where you are not logged in. I usually am logged in to my smug site on Firefox and logged out on Chrome and IE. That way I can have two browsers open at once, one logged in, one logged out.

Does anyone have any coding for a navbar that operates the way the one on http://www.ibarraphoto.com works except have it pull up from the bottom rather than trop down from the top?

There are a bunch of different types of jquery menus out there. I'm not sure exactly where that one came from though.

Ok I have a friend helping me out who knows way more about all this. He noticed in my slideshow (it's the fastline media one in the sticky) there is a lot of extra stuff in there. When he makes my menu bar does it have to correspond with the stuff in fastline code that says like "maps" etc? should I re-write those to what my menu names will be?

As well - how do I get rid of all the stuff at the bottom of the page that says like "hosted by SmugMug" etc?

Since my slideshow is from Fastline, should I be searching for navbar stuff in the same way or will things juts mesh?

We are not allowed to remove the hosted by and the smug copyright info from the footer (per these release notes - http://news.smugmug.com/2010/08/19/n...arketing-tips/).

Ok well then how is it removed on the sites I have mentioned earlier
httlp://www.richardsilverphoto.com
http://www.ibarraphoto.com

If it can't be removed, I would figure there is at least someway to hide it or move it to another page so it is out of the way. I want to have my homepage as clean and minimal as possible.

Ok so I am still seriously struggling here and I want to at least get my site functioning before my trial ends otherwise I dont think i am going to go through with this account as much as I really really would like to.

I got a navbar up, I dont understand what is up with my slideshow so I removed it. Is there anywhere else I can find a fullscreen slideshow that does have all the messy script stuff like Fastline?

As well - how do I customize the size of the gallery and the background - again using Ibarra Photo as an example - I want my galleries to look the same way with the space/gap between the nav bar (see - http://www.ibarraphoto.com/Photography) because if you go to my site now, you'll see the dropdown menu pops up over the breadcrumb and I obviously don't want that.

I also can't find anything on how to include social media buttons/share stuff like how you see with the little facebook and twitter icon. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE someone help!

I also have followed the tutorial on the contact link and that doesn't work either on my Contact...only when you click contact at the footer which I don't want. And I cant find info on whether I can remove that footer. Some places indicate you can (as Pro account) and others say you cant (because you once could and now can't) and all the instructions that show how to hide it don't work.

First start by downloading this image locally, and then upload it to your "smugmug site files" gallery, once you have it there, post a direct link to that gallery and we'll start getting you all squared away.

Change your custom footer box to this:
Code:
<div id="sfl-footer-wrap">
<div id="sfl-footer">

<div id="sfl-copyright">
<span>©</span>

<script type="text/javascript">
var date = new Date();
document.write(date.getFullYear());
</script>

<span>Bradford Mahler - All Rights Reserved</span>

<span class="sfl-footer-sep"> | </span>

<span class="sfl-login-link">
<a href="https://secure.smugmug.com/login.mg">Login</a></span>
<span class="sfl-logout-link">
<a href="http://www.smugmug.com/logout.mg">Logout</a></span>
<span class="sfl-footer-sep"> | </span>

<span id="sfl-site-credits-toggle">
<a href="javascript:void(0);" onclick="this.style.display = 'none'; document.getElementById('sfl-site-credits').style.display = 'inline';">Site Credits</a></span>
<span style="display:none;" id="sfl-site-credits">Photo hosting by <a title="Photo hosting" href="http://www.smugmug.com/pro">SmugMug Pro</a>

<script type="text/javascript">
document.getElementById('sfl-site-credits').style.display = 'none';
</script>

</div>

<div style="clear:both;"></div>
</div>
</div>

Add this to your CSS box:

Code:

/* custom footer*/

#sfl-footer {width:350px;margin:auto;
padding:20px;color:#666666;font-size:11px}

#sfl-footer a {color:#666666 !important}
#sfl-footer .sfl-footer-sep {padding: 0 5px}
#sfl-footer #sfl-copyright {float:left}

.notLoggedIn .sfl-logout-link {display:none}
.loggedIn .sfl-login-link {display:none}

#footer_wrapper, #cobrand_footer
{display: none !important}
