It is portable, but not in that particular manner. Also, think a little closer to the source of the sound, but not the actual recording (past or present tense) of it. It is a speaker, in a manner, but it requires a sort of amplifier. "Old" and "classic" still apply.

I may end up with 78 guesses to this one!

Close enough! It's the resonator for an RCA Victrola.

What happens is, the needle is mounted to the resonator, which sends the sound through the tone arm to the sound box. Believe it or don't, there are only two ways to control volume: changing the needle from hard to soft or shoving a sock in the sound box. (Ever wondered where the phrase, "Shove a sock in it" to silence a loud talker came from?) Until you've experienced one, you really don't know how loud these things are.

I found it in an antique store in Barstow about a week ago. Here's a picture of it.

Originally I took this picture for when I did the looking up assignment...but then thought it would make for an interesting guess what. I took this while laying on the couch looking up. Its my hubby's first moose he had ever hunted. He has adorned our wall for over 10 years. Ty for looking!

Dale, I understand it's a chromed wall fixture in some bar/restautart (rotated 90 CCW)?

Close enough. The chromed domes across the ceiling reflecting from the lighted sign in the entrance to the Cirque du Soleil show "Love".
