Assignment #40: 40mph+
I'm sure everybody got enough profiles in their portfolio for the rest of this year. Let's switch to something more dynamic. Much more dynamic.
The new goal is to shoot dead ahead of at 90degree angle from the side from a moving vehicle that moves at least 40mph (that 60kmh for our European friends). To ensure safety, please do NOT shoot and drive. Ride a bus, a train, or ask somebody to drive you. There are several goals. One is simply try to get a sharp and properly exposed picture - which can be amazingly difficult. Another is to find a slow shutter speed that would create a zoom effect when shooting straight ahead: the central (farthest) part of the picture should stay sharp, while the periphery should become blurred. Naturally, shooting back is also a possibility! About same goes to the side shots. One is to get some nice sharp image. Another is to get a nice motion blur. And of course, there is a combo, when another object with the same speed is sharp, while the b/g is blurred. Once again, the safety is paramount, don't try this while driving!!! And for those of you who live in the urban environment, a shot straigt up may create an interesting effect with the bases of the buildings blurred and the tops sharp enough. One image per entry please. Add some description (what was your goal, how you did it, etc.), and if possible, some basic exif info. As usual, fresh pictures only (meaning: taken AFTER you have become aware pf this assignment), moderate post-processing. No PS blurring! For the rest of the basic rules and index please check out this sticky. Let's get some speed shots!

Antonio,
Thank you for the entries, first two are perfect!
#3: I kinda doubt you were going 60kmh or faster at the moment in this heavily populated European urban environment

We should go at may be 50 kms/h but the road was good because it was narrow and the movement should be well captured. Nikolai, have you ever noticed that the EXIF is wronge ? Or, it's just me ? The lens was the 16-35 and I do know it was set at 16mm. The EXIF says the lens is 25.6 in 35 mm. What does that mean ? ![]() 1.6 (crop factor) * 16 = 25.6 in fact. But in 35 mm ? And how could it guess I am using a 1.6 crop camera or a 1.3 crop one ? What I am missing here ? ![]() Here it is late afernoon. It is now 8.45h or so. We are going out again to re-shoot and I hope to be able to post more pictures today, in a couple of hours. The real difficult for me in this assignment was the shutter speed I could not low down because I was not using the NDF or the CPF because I left it at home. |

The shutter speed was too low
Here we were speeding a bit. I saw the tableboard and we were at 70 kms/h at that moment.

Hints?
So what's the secret to getting these shots? I've tried doing this type of thing in the past but it has never worked out for me - I either have to shoot so fast that I get no blur, or else everything is blurred by bumpiness/movement. Do you just need a good road?

Nikolai.
Since the beginning I thought the photos to the back were possible. Neaker, May be the secret is a large car with a super suspension - remember the Citroen DS ? - or a trail like the ones used in films. May be, and I will not have the chance to, if the photos were shot from a train for example. There, you could even use a tripod ! There is a clear incompatibility between slow speed for the expression of the movement and the hight speed, even relative, of the vehicle we are in. The quality of the road is also important. Nikolai: no tips ? Or are you waiting for more proposals ? May be after 254 shots we can get one good ! Or 546 shots ! |

Next, you need to do a little math homework with the intention to find a shutter speed and the aperture that would provide for both blurry parts and sharp part of the image. Depending on the time of day, distance to the potential frame subjects and the actual speed your parameters may vary drastically. I would not rely on auto-anything, full manual is the way to go. You will have to use all three possible parameters: ISO, aperture and shutter speed. You can also try bracketing. HTH

Infinity will soften pretty much the whole shot. Since you going for a relatively slow shutter speed (1/40s..1/120s), your aperture will be at least f/8 or slower (unless you're doing a night shot), that would give you a nice hyperfocal range.
