Newbie Stats Question

Do Stats data include the owner's views? If so, is there any way to exclude them?

Thanks.

PS - after 1 day of my trial (a PBase refugee in waiting) SmugMug looks great even though I'm having to manually transfer my galleries

I believe the way it works is that stats don't count logged in page views. So, as long as you're logged in you're covered.

    Hi Ed,

    Welcome to Dgrin! wave.gif

As long as you're logged in as the account owner, you won't generate hits on your own site.

Manually transferring? How about giving Pbase2SmugMug from here a try? I hope it works for you.

    Sebastian,

    Thanks for the response.

I had looked at PBase2SmugMug shortly after arriving. It seems to be a work in progress. Before committing to leave PBase I used a utility - pbgrab.exe - that copied all of my PBase images into gallery folders on my hard drive. The success of that step convinced me that the transition to SmugMug was doable.

There are about 100 galleries to transfer and I'll just take a couple of weeks and move them manually > create a new SmugMug gallery; drag & drop the related pbgrab folder contents; do some minimal drag to arrange; repeat the process until done. This is working well; the only problem is the captions.

I am also curious about the stats views as there is a big discrepancy between what shows up on my Google Analytics Report and what shows up on the smugmug stats (much more activity on smugmug).

From what I understand, version 1.1 of pbgrab is supposed to download the captions as well:
    http://forum.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?p=194582&sid=107a8db5369b79f0385e171b730a8921#p194582

The final version of version 1.1. seems to be downloadable on the developers site.
Could you give that a try? If the captions are embedded into the JPG files using the standard IPTC Caption field, they'll be automatically imported as the caption on SmugMug when you upload the photos.

Google Analytics (GA) can only log hits when the visitor actually visits your SmugMug page including the GA code. If the photo is linked on a forum, or if it shows on www.smugmug.com in the browse section (e.g. the popular photo section), GA can't know that.

I did use 1.1 and did enable captions. pbgrab created a captions folder along with the images in each PBase gallery folder that it copied & created. There was a corresponding caption file in the caption folder for each copied image. The good news ends there. Unfortunately, the content was an html file such as this "<html><head></head><body><h3>Caption for Image 1 (83854107).jpg:</h3></body></html>" which isn't the actual caption nor useful. When I have some time, I'll try it again but don't expect anything different as I did try it several times on a single gallery before being confident enough to let pbgrab grab away at all 100+ galleries.

Even if it ever does grab the captions correctly, having them embedded within an html file isn't particularly helpful.

Thanks Sebastian, I've been trying to figure out why there was such a huge discrepancy for quite some time and you've cleared it up for me now. So there's no way to get around this issue so that Google Analytics can see instances of page views originating from forum threads or smugmug.com?

    Another Newbie Stats question.
As of right now I have 8713 Hits and 1791 Views. It would appear that views are also hits, but hits are not views. What exactly is the difference icon5.gificon5.gif
    Thanks,
