I'm the sort that likes very bright & contrasty images, to the extent that when editing I always adjust levels and/or curves for more contrast, then again, and again... then finally decide I've probably gone a bit too far and tone it back a bit.

I then bump it back up again.

So, just looking through your public Weddings gallery, I don't see any images that I would describe as too contrasty (not even close).

I find this one a little too dark, and not contrasty enough, for example (light on their faces has no direction). Similarly these flowers are too flat, whereas the bouquet here looks great (though I'm not generally a big fan of selective color that way, if the clients like it, great). At least some of the shots I see could be improved in processing.

Other than that, I see plenty of good shots, as well as some creative compositions and framing (some of which work better than others), so if you're working for "practically nothing", you deserve more.

I did send you a message asking for your private gallery info as well, and just thought I'd add: in your response there, do you mind sharing which photos you considered to be some of your best that they didn't use?

Disclaimer: I am not yet a professional photographer, so everything I state is based on my own developing sense & taste, rather than experience with clients.

I've only been a professional photographer for a bit over a year, but I'd love to give you my opinion. Firstly I noticed in your gallery that as the pages went on, the photos got better, so you're either doing a lot more practicing or you've learned a great deal from the photographer you've been working with (or a combination of it all). I do think you have some talent. That being said I do see a few things that bother me. And remember, this is JUST my opinion.

Firstly I can't stand the whole "make some things color, some things black and white in a photo" thing. It's dated and unless a bride and groom specifically ask for it, I tend to avoid doing it. Next there are a few photos that are a bit crooked and I don't think should be crooked. Some of your shots are very creative - like the W on the wedding cake in front of the bride and groom. Some, like the dress shots - not so much. I don't see that the photos are too dark (there may have been one or two but nothing major), and I do think that you could have a great future in wedding photography. I'd learn as much as you could from the photographer that you're working with and then either move on to try your own or try to work with another photographer. And honestly I'd feel lucky if I could work with a photographer, simply because we only have one professional photographer in my area and he NEVER accepts working with anyone else.

My only questions is, why are you editing images that you give them? If you get paid low, why bother? I would shoot, burn and have them edit to their liking (Bella style) lol.

Meanwhile, do your own thing and edit images with your own style for your own portfolio, and learn what you can while shooting for someone else.

I sent my response in a private message. Thanks for the feedback!

I took a look at your site in the wedding gallery. My honest, gut level assessment is that you are a decent ameteur/starting pro. Most of the shots are fair with some good ones interspersed though nothing stopped me in my tracks in the 1st 70 photos or so.

I love #15! Many of the other images seem a little underexposed or overprocessed, but this one is 100% successful in my opinion. I like that they are focused on each other, I like the colors and I think the processing looks spot on. Based on this photo, it is clear that you have skill and potential. I would try to figure out all of the things that came together in this image and work from there.

    Good luck!!!

Seems about right. The other question is, how much should a second shooter of that level be paid?
