Which of these lenses would you buy?
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Non USM Lens

Or

Sigma Canon EOS 105mm f2.8 EX DG Macro

Both of course used.

thanks

Most of the "true" 1:1 macro lenses are very high quality. I do suggest the 100mm (ish) length as the sweet spot for cost and utility. I just purchased the Tamron SP 90mm, F/2.8 1:1 Macro and it is also a worthy consideration.

So you wouldn't pick one of these over the other?
They are both on ebay and I am torn between them.

    Thanks

Unless a budgetary squeeze is a major factor, I'd go canon for the USM, and the constant physical size, both really really nice usability bonuses.

:Edit:11doh.gif Just realized you said the non-USM version, well that does even things up then doesn't it...

I don't know if that one focuses by extension or not, if it doesn't focus internally, then I'd be stuck. Sigma usually provides accessories (hood+pouch) that Canon doesn't, so maybe that would be the tipping point, particularly since the sigma's current, the canon isn't.

I would trust KEH.com way more than anyone at EBay. Without knowing the condition of the lenses I'm afraid I couldn't choose either lens that you mentioned over the other.

Canon for it's better USM AF motor, lack of extending front element. The optics may be better but most macros have excellent optics so I think the difference isn't much.
