College? Already?...help.

Alright, so next year I'm going to be applying to colleges with hopes that I will get accepted so that I can attend, piss away my life savings on tuition, and take out student loans that will no doubt haunt me for a very long time. So, naturally. I want to make the right decision for the college.

My end goal is to get a major in Photojournalism. So with that in mind, I need to know what colleges have the best programs. So far the only one people have been telling me is Western Kentucky University, and believe me it looks like a fine school and I will be visiting their campus on spring break this year so that I can get a feel for it. However, it is 700$ a credit hour for out of state tuition... so needless to say I'd prefer more options unless I land some amazing scholarships... :deal

My question for you Dgrin, is where do you suggest I check out? Any tips, suggestions, and previous experiences are all appreciated. I'd like to know what is out there and to keep my options open.

Wichita State has a very good Journalism Dept in the Elliot School of Communication........and the Fine Arts Dept has once again (a few years ago) started up its photography classes, which were not available when I was looking for them...............

I know this isn't what you were asking but if you have your heart set on going to an out of state school, just tell them you are an illegal alien, and if they are like California you will get the in state residents rate.

I think your best option is find an institution that offers both a great photojournalism and liberal arts program. I would also suggest to keep an eye out for those very same schools' tuition and their history of tuition rises. Tuition, sadly, is going up some more some less, so that is one thing to consider.

If you are applying next year, get in touch with the programs and universities now. Take tours around the campus, get to know the department you want to focus on, talk to the department staff, if you can talk to a prof even better! The best way to get a feel of a school is visiting and talking.

Is there a Jr College near home that you can take your general credits at a lower cost, and then transfer them and you to the PJ school of choice?
Living at home will be much cheaper than on campus.
What about on line courses?

www.brooks.edu offers what you are looking for. Lots of successful photographers have come through their doors. And it meets the criteria of being in a nice location too. Santa Barbara, CA

Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys. As far as going to a community college before hand, we have a good one here. However, I feel like I have to get out of Kansas. It isn't that I just hate Kansas, but I REALLY need/want a change of scenery, preferably something a little more mountainous. However I don't want to sacrifice Quality of schooling for just getting out of Kansas if a certain school will be too expensive.

Please keep the suggestions flowing

Wherever you go be sure to take some business courses. It doesn't matter how good you are behind the camera, if you don't learn how to run a business you will be SOOL, especially in these economic times.
