    On the first 2 pics, I had sunlight for my light source, had the camera meter
    on the light, The table top has a dark cover, so the background just came out dark.
    On the others, I worked it in photoshop.
    On some other things that I have done, I used a black piece of foam core.

    I agree with you completely...I shot a daisy in sunlight and the exposure made the background appear black and I get lots of compliments on it. It is one of my favorites. A similar picture taken with the exposure fixed that shows more of the background blurred isn't eye catching at all.

    Here is one I did last year.

    Not only does a black background look good in the photo, but I have been using black mat material on many photos when framing them.
