Giro d'Italia crash - how'd he do that?

A friend sent me this photo:

Besides the fact that this is an amazing crash, does anyone else notice that it's rather neat that the crashing rider is in focus while the leading rider who is actually filling up the frame is out of focus? I know they are both soft in the middle 2 frames, but I still feel like mr crash is a little sharper.

In any case, some amazing stuff. I'm not a fan of crash scenes (been there too many times myself), but you have to admire the emotion and desire that goes in to putting yourself in this situation to get a win.

Wow! That's a nice series of images.

I bet the shooter uses the back focus button and stayed on the crashing
rider.

You can do it too

www.siphoto.com will give you some hints as to how.
And I think you can download a settings file too.

For the 1d, back focus is set to "*".

I LOVE that kind of photography!!

I shoot a lot of things coming at me moving fast and my experience is the lens is just a little behind in the focus because it's changing so fast. My guess is that's what happened here. It's really hard to stay spot on the focus on a bicycle coming so quickly.

Those are the 2 of the fastest guys out there right now! I'd need my GS to keep up with either Bettini or Cooke!!
