Photoshop gurus

Oh Photoshop gurus! Or lest I step on anyone's toes, any other kind of imaging software guru.

I am continually impressed with what I've seen y'all do here in this forum. I'm just learning the ropes of post processing myself and would love some ideas / input / help with the following photo(s).

The photos were obviously taken during the winter, and was a sudden shift to very cold weather, so there were many interesting things frozen into the ice and a sort of frost on everything. Unfortunately, the light was flat that day and the resulting photo just doesn't do the day justice. I also tried one framed slightly differently with a fill flash, but wasn't too happy with that either.

Howdy eschick!

These pictures are really cool

. Here's something simple I did with them:

Adjusted:

and...

Original:

Adjusted:

In both cases I used a Curves Adjustment Layer to set the white and black points. I'd write an explaination of what I did, but there are a ton of good write-ups on this subject available on the web. A google on photoshop curves black point should get you started.
