Welcome to Round #83 of the Dgrin mini-challenges.

This challenge is open to any Dgrin member. It will run from now Tuesday, October 6, 9:30 pm, PDT time to Tuesday, October 20, 9:30 pm, PDT. (2 weeks)

The topic ready for your interpretation: Nighttime

Your Judge:
-dseidman (Danny)

As day turns to night, a whole new array of photographic opportunities present themselves. This is a time that calls for experimentation and creativity that often yields highly unique photographs. It seems all too common that photographers will pack up their gear and head home once the sun has set and darkness moves in. For those of you who have stayed behind, I’d love to see what you’ve produced.

The examples I have posted below are landscapes and cityscapes but you are welcome to make the subject whatever you'd like as long as it's apparent that you were shooting under the conditions of night. Also, please refrain from posting sunrise or sunset photos.

An hour's worth of air traffic over Seattle.

Double Arch in Arches N.P. as seen under moonlight.

Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, dont let this just be an entry thread!
6. Dont be hesitant, share'em and enter!

How, may I ask, do you do this?

    583363808_X6tPy-L-3.jpg

Without getting any streaking? Is your camera mounted to a telescope that allows an obscene amount of light to the sensor in a short time? I would love to shoot something like this but don't understand the method.

Ha! I read the theme as "Nightmare" not "Nighttime" - caught up in the Halloween fever, I guess... so, edited to supply this instead:

Cool topic and some great shots so far! Time to dig or get off my butt and get out after dark! For starters:

    A moonlight wake
    556385661_H3YRz-L.jpg

didn't do much for editing except crop in close and convert to b&w. oh, and cloned out an extraneous branch. somehow it looks more like a screen print than a photograph.

Wow, amazing entries. Certainly some of these are the most beautiful nighttime shots I've ever seen.

In order to learn and get better, I must try. Here are some of mine

    1. 16th Street Mall in Denver during the Christmas season

    2. Denver City and County Building, lit up for the Christmas season

    4. Inside the Eisenhower Tunnel along I70, west of Denver. This tunnel is at an elevation of over 11,000 feet and is about 1.7 miles long.

I call this "Silly String" but is is actually a 4 second exposure of a bunch of bugs flying in front of a light on a summers night. In the hi-res version, you can actually see the wing flaps of one of the larger bugs.

To get stationary star shots under very dark conditions such as in the above photo, you need to push your camera to its limits. I shot this at f/4 (wide open) and ISO 5000 for 25 seconds. This is pretty much the longest exposure time I could have before star streaks would become noticeable at my chosen focal length (17mm on full frame).

Okay. I must be crazy to enter this challenge with so many incredible entries. But I love the topic, and all these entries are quite inspiring (for both light-deprived photography and travel).

    So here goes:

    1. Science World and the Vancouver skyline

    679433063_skNGD-L-2.jpg

    2. Winter camping at Artist Point (by moonlight)

    587861188_8G9uR-L-7.jpg

    3. Busking at the steps of Prague Castle

Being a relative noobie to this (and any) photography forums, please forgive me if my initial attempts at uploading is somewhat suboptimal... If this does not work well, maybe it would be an indictment of my ability to follow directions...
