Still learning lighting techniques...

Took some photos of some friends' kids this past weekend.. No charge for the friends.. I was doing it to help them get some good shots of their kids, and to help me gain some experience with lighting and backdrops. They did end up hooking me up with some "Beverages and More" gift cards for my time and effort though :) ..
This was my second time using a backdrop and various lighting sources and reflector boards - the previous time was using a black backdrop, which I feel was much more difficult to effectively light.

I used a white muslin backdrop with a variety of lighting.. I was going for 'crisp' and 'clean' images... I'm still learning how to use lighting.. critiques and suggestions welcomed..

#2 - I'm really loving the light here. Nice soft shadows and it doesn't appear as if there are any extremely hot spots. And the shadows are complimentary to boot.

#3 - Shadows not so nice to your model.

#7 is a portrait to die for. She is sooooo cute and you captured her so well. I love the light on her as well.

#8 I like this one too.

    #9 too.

#14 The light is working here as well.

None of the shots are bad, these are just the ones that strike a positive chord for me. My least favorite is #10 - got some pretty strong shadows on her face.

I like the studio shots a lot. There is good lighting making the eyes look great.

#4, 7, 11 and 14 really shine! Number 7 is your ultimate keeper! The outfit, the look the composition, the focus, the lighting...you have EVERYTHING going for you in that shot. The stars and planets really all lined up for you in that frame! Great work! You should of charged for that session, lol! :) I wish I owned some studio lighting to play with. Right now I just am going for the discount Rembranted shadow look :) Thanks for sharing.clap.gif

Thank you all for the comments and suggestions!! For my 2nd 'studio style' shoot (using backdrop, lighting, etc)... I'm pretty happy with the results. It helps to have friends with great looking kids.. the girl with the curly hair has done some modeling too, so she's familiar with posing. She is actually on the front of a Williams Sonoma product right now!
