Nice set, but #1 is fantastic. The way the fellow is looking relative to the much more philosophical looks of the woman and the two guys in the back ground is a fun contrast.

I have to agree with Andrew. I find number one to be an excellent gathering of opposing personalities: thoughtful, angry, paranoid, curiosity. Well done! thumb.gif

Thanks for the comments, Andrew and Thoth. #1 is my favorite, too. They are all looking in different directions.

Of #4 and #5, which do you prefer?

How about #6 and #7? I really loved the profile of the woman in the foreground. Is this too close to be considered street?

Would any of them benefit from a crop? Or any other PP?

I really like the noise in your photos. Reminds me of my Tri-X days! :D

Of 4/5 5. You get a better feel for his face, and you don't have the woman's face turning in the background.

6/7 is a tossup. I tend to like 7 since she looks piqued about something, whereas 6 seems mroe bored with it all. These two don't really move me nearly as much as the others.

An honest question. What is it in #6 that made it such a clear winner. Usually I can see what might make you see a shot as a winner, but this one eludes me some here. I see why #5 is a keeper, and was a bit surprised by your skipping #1 (though I think #1 is slightly diminished by having #2 there since you see the guy engage in it, so it shatters some of the story I was getting from just #1).

    Thanks

For me it's precisely the thing you didn't like - her expressionrolleyes1.gif Maybe it's boredom - but I see sadness, perhaps detachment. There's something about the slight bit of camera blur that pulls me into the woman's head - and it's set off by the very out-of-focus woman in the background. I just see it as an emotionally compelling image. But this is - as always - a matter of opinion.

Thanks. I get it. Doesn't work for me, but I now get what you see in it.

me too think the nr6 is a strong shot, but not because it tells a story.
i like it because the possition of the two faces and the beautiful grain.
i have been looking at this thread for several days now and always landed on this shot.
what "ruins" it for me is that i think you show too much of the head.
i know this is extreeme, but this is how i see it:

Thanks for the great discussion, Andrew, BD, BMW Kurt, and tortillatorture. This is what I am hoping for when I post a photo - what makes a picture work, what can be done to improve it.

Wow, tortillatorture! I would not have thought to crop out the eyes of the person most in focus! I think you may be correct about too much of the head of the woman in the foreground. The ear doesn't really add anything.

Here is the crop I am thinking of.

Here is another photo from a slightly different viewpoint. Better or worse? There is a touch of motion blur in this one. Would it be better with a tad cropped off the right and the bottom?

I like the first of the two. By culling so much of her head, it is more about the expression and about the lines of the picture now. The second one seems to have a halo along the length of her nose that I find distracting.
