more hockey - lighting only one end

I was only allowed to put two lights at one end of rink, so you'll see some ghosting and some light cycles, at least the ref let me explain lighting to him after the game, and I should be ok next time in this arena...

What was the ref's reason for not allowing them? I don't really see a reason not to unless they could be struck by a puck or perhaps fall on the ice surface creating a danger for the players.

As the referee, he's responsible for ensuring the playing surface, etc. are safe. Before the start of the game is not the time to plead your case. Especially if it's an upper division game. I know that before my games, my partner and I inspect the playing surface, set the nets, check all of the gates all in addition to warming up. And we generally get about 5 minutes to do all of that and check the score sheet. So I can see why he might have blown you off

I wonder sometimes if it wouldn't be a good idea to write the local district referee in chief and explain what you're trying to do to him/her. Maybe try and get to some level of understanding that allows them to explain to all officials what's going on and allows photographers to light their games

Hopefully not a stupid question, but...one PW to fire the 2 Sb-800? Is there a jumper between them. I am not real experienced in the PW/flash setup. I do a simple one PW one SB 800 setup. I just didnt think you would get that quantity of light. Is the arena well lit to begin with?

I would get ISO 5000, f2.8 here without flash.

I use a 1/8" mono jumper that triggers two SB800s. It's enough to stop most action at 1/4 power...

Thanks! I like that Idea. Im looking at buying some DC strobes, but having the SB 800 setup like you have it would make it easier to move around.

Hi Tim. Where did you get the bracket for the two flashes? On your advice I tried my 580 last night and it dropped the required iso from 2000 to 800. Good stuff. Since I tend to move around the rink can this set up be mounted on the camera? John

It's a brewer bracket Great product. Can't mount on your camera, but some ingenious person will figure out how...
