First hockey game with Nikon D90

After a great deal of reading and discussing, I recently made the very painful decision to part ways with my beloved Pentax gear and move to Nikon. I sold off my K20D and lenses to finance a D90 and lenses with my primary reasoning being that I wanted the superior AF system and more FPS.

Though it's obviously too early to tell just yet, I can say so far so good. Here's a look at three sample shots I got yesterday at the old Windsor Arena as the University of Windsor Lancers (blue) took to the ice versus the visiting Ryerson Rams (white).

First, a little tripping penalty

Next, a look at how to shield the puck using your body

And lastly, a solo effort here by the first man in

All shots with Nikon D90, 80-200 F2.8, and no flash.

Thanks for looking,

I assume there is no cutout for shooting in the corners? The pictures are quite clear. Faces are much easier to get when the players aren't wearing cages. Looks like your switch in gear has been a good move.

Correct. Outside of the Joe Louis in Detroit or the ACC in Toronto, I have yet to see photographer's cutouts in any of the arenas I've been in. It's too bad though, because the glass undeniably lessens the image quality. Thanks for looking / commenting.

Nice! I just purchased a D90 to shoot High School hockey and am very happy with it.
I had some trouble with dirty glass this past weekend...it can be frustrating.

    Thanks!

With fast glass, you'll do well. With consumer glass you'll find it much more difficult. As for the dirty glass - yeah - that's a problem everywhere you shoot. You would think the rink attendants could squeegie them once a week or month eh?

Congrats on the new body! Well done! thumb.gif

    Some suggestions...
    1) Watch your horizons (like #1 and #2)
    2) Shoot tight (what you're doing), crop tighter (#2, #4)

As for the glass, carry around paper towels and a small bottle of glass cleaner.

    Keep on shooting and positing...
