multiple galleries settings, Appearance setting not setting

For some reason I can't get the 'Appearance' setting to stick, when using the 'multiple galleries' gallery settings.
Go to a random gallery, and look at the current 'Appearance' setting to see what it is (either 'SmugMug' or 'Custom'). Go to the gallery setting page and select the 'Multiple Galleries' page/tab. Select at least one other gallery as well. Under 'Look & Feel' go to 'Appearance' and select the option that was not set before. Save the changes (repeat with the opposite selection to be sure).
When I do this, my 'Appearance' setting does not change.
When I make the same changes using the Gallery Settings page for a single gallery, it works without a problem.

If I go gallery by gallery, I can assign a password, but ONLY if there is no featured image set--and once you set a featured image, I cannot figure out how to unset it.
