HDR / Extended Definition Processing Sports Portraits

My brother is a College athlete and I am wanting to get a few shots of some of him and some of his teammates that have the HDR/"Extended Definition Processing" look that many of the Sports Portrait shots that are being done these days...Example: http://www.joelgrimes.com/ This looks to me like a three light setup one light in front and high...one to the left...and one to the right? Are these real HDR shots or are they "Extended Definition Processing" as Scott Kelby calls it? Does anyone have work flow set up for photoshop to get these kind of results?

Scott Kelby had a post on his blog about shooting the "Dave Hill" look which this technique is frequently called.
Usually involves two lights, one off to each side and slightly behind the subject, flagged to prevent lens flare, and a beauty dish or large softbox above the camera, to create the sculpted look. Then some processing to create the HDR type look, with Photoshop or Topaz Adjust, or other software.
