I'm glad you posted these. I'm considering the same upgrade. Can you give me specifics on these two photos (particularly lens & ISO used). I've been shooting mostly at 1600 & 3200 (max on the 40D) and am really curious how you think the higher ISOs compare on the 7D. Also are you having any trouble with the focusing on the 7D. I hear its pretty advanced, does it take some getting used to. Thanks.

The Exif info in the pic says ISO 2000, f/4.5, 1/500 sec ss, 120mm focal length.
Canon EOS 1D MK III and 7d; Canon 100 f/2.0; Canon 17-40 f/4; Canon 24-70 f/2.8; Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS; Canon 300 f/2.8L IS; Canon 1.4x and Sigma 2x; Sigma EF 500 DG Super and Canon 580 EX II.
How much noise reduction did you have to do, if any?
If so, what did you use to do the NR?
I am trying to decide whether to pick up a used MKIII in the spring or go for a brand new 7D.
I am a serious hobbyist shooting hockey with an XSi and a Canon EF 70-200 f2.8L IS (yeah I know...that's like putting a bow tie on a pig) so the ISO/NR specs are VERY important to me. I usually shoot 1/640 or 1/800 at f/4.0 and ISO1600 - the XSi's noise is really degrading my pics.
I want to go to the next level in capability/quality. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Kip, These have been run thru Noiseware (But at a very low percentage). probably wouldn't need any if you don't plan to print at a larger size (IMO).
I also looked @ a MkIII before I got the 7D. My local shop made me a great deal by taking an extra 20% off if I bought the vertical grip at the same time, so I did.
I think either camera is great for shooting hockey. This rink is well lit, most aren't. You can check my galleries to compare. All were shot with the 7D.

My guess is he was using the 70-200 f/2.8 lens.
