Man that looks fun as hell. That is untill you get in the predicament of that last pic. If one goes down, they all go down and the studs on those tires would not be kind to you!!!!!

This looks like a REALLY dangerous place to be shooting from!
Short lens, outside of the corner, big metal spikes. Scary spot for sure.

That is very cool and cold too I bet. I enjoyed this - something very different but still similar to dirt bikes. Thanks for sharing.

Great shots!! You should have taken a couple pics of the spikes sticking out of those tires:D.

thanks for all the compliements dudes. I never thought I'd be wishing for more cold weather but we're lookign at 40 this weekend so I'm guessing the ice will be soft. we've had a pretty cood cold spell here, about an hour north of NYC. Not brutal but good old fashioned cold as in teens for a high and about zero with the wind chill for the lows. but Sunday was fun and I was dressed for it so I had a real blast. The bikes are all MX bikes converted to purpose built ice bikes. they only stud the center and left side of the tire as just like dirt track its always a left turn. #56 really knew how to lay it down and was totally fearless.

As far as shooting, when the sun was not being blocked by clouds, there was so much light I was getting up in the 13 range on the aperture, which I never got in strong sun shooting regualr MX, but obviously the snow/ice was a big reflector, and I fell like I learned enough this past summer and fall with the new (now not so new) D300 that at least I didn't screw them up.

As I've stated before the 18-200 lens is no sports lens and through many dusty days at the MX tracks I've concluded that for action with that lens F8 and higher (much in that light) is the way to go for good focus. I used SmugMug color correction so the 167 bike's rider's black suit is REALLY black but overall I'm still pretty happy with the shots, plus I was using flash with some good results also.

thanks again for the comments and glad you all liked them.
