New to the game

Bell is her name, and she's old enough to start hunting! We were actually just scouting for some ducks, but all the ponds & lakes were frozen over. I know that doesn't sound like any big deal to you Northerners, but for North Central Texas, it's a big deal!

Love the frozen waves.

Did you gel the flash on 3, or warm up the whole image in post? Where was your flash in this one, seems slightly off-center, but not much.

Image #3 was shot using 580EX camera left through umbrella via PW TT5. I did gel the flash with full CTO, then adjusted WB in post. The umbrella was about touching my left shoulder. I wanted to keep the rich sky, so I set the WB for pleasing tones there and the foreground, then desaturated his face and hand some to pull back on the orange there. (We got back to the truck just a tad too late to catch the pretty sunset, while the sun was still above the horizon)

Side note: All but shot #3 were with my old 30D that hasn't had the shutter pushed in about 3 years. I grabbed it to mount my 70-200 + 1.4TC on for the longer reach. Evidently, it still works!

Shot #3: 5D2 ~ 17-40L

Poor dog...when trained to hunt they get depressed if there aren't any birds around.

Fun series, Randy! I was interested in your explanation of the setup for the "portrait" shot--I haven't even bought a hot shoe flash, let alone any external flash equipment. It's one of the things I want to start learning about, so I appreciated your comments.

As for the dog . . . what a beauty! I was never a Lab fan until I found my Murphy. Someday, I will have another one because I've learned what fabulous dogs they are. (Ssshhh, don't tell Darby or Josie that I said that.)

Great stuff--thanks for sharing!!

You don't have to wait until you "get" your flash to start learning.
