The Pentax K-x appears to have 1 user programmable button, the "Green" button. The Green button may be assigned the following functions:

The default setup, called the "Green Button" in the green button setup menu
    Custom Image
    Optical Preview
    Digital Preview
    Digital Filter
    RAW Button Function
    Center AF Point

Setup procedure is on pages 179-181 of your User Manual, also located here:

Do you have a specific function you find difficult to program?

When you change the camera to manual you select the shutter speed etc. All the pictures come out almost completely dark, even in bright settings. i still have yet to figure out what other settings i need to change in order for the pictures to come out viewable. This is one of the only settings and options on the camera i have yet to figure out.

When you operate a camera in manual, you have to understand exposure because the camera will not set it for you.

Ekaj is correct. In simplest terms exposure is comprised of 3 elements:

    Aperture
    Shutter speed
    Sensitivity/ISO

If you are in manual mode and you are getting dark results you:

Open the aperture of the lens (smaller numbers)
Lengthen the shutter speed (longer fractions of a second, generally)
Use a more sensitive ISO setting (larger ISO number)

You may use any or all of these to obtain the correct exposure, which you can somewhat verify in the viewfinder exposure indicator.

For an explanation about manual exposure:

You may want to set it to one of the other semi-manual settings. Maybe start with the Tv mode, where you set the shutter speed & the camera corrects the other settings.

Though the easiest way to get into it is the running man icon, which automatically gives priority to shutter speed.
