3 shot HDR vs 3 vs 5 vs 7 vs 9 exposures??

I'm curious what the benefits would be of shooting more than 3 exposures to create an HDR. I have a D90 and it can only bracket 3 shots...I'm just curious what the difference would be for someone capable of putting together 5, or 9 shots.

I think that it would depend on the DR of the scene and if the camera could capture it all in 3 exposures and how far apart the exposures were. One can have great success at extending the DR of an image when comparing 3 well fused and or tone-mapped exposures to a single image...I am not sure where the point of diminishing returns lies with the many variables at play - so for some images you might not see much difference, while for others more exposures may create smoother tonal transitions or show more detail or whatnot.
