The Mavericks Surfing Competition

I'm in Half Moon Bay, Ca. getting ready to shoot the Mavericks surfing competition Saturday.(13 Feb.) This is a crazy, nasty, brutal place to surf. The competition is only scheduled when storm waves will get to 30-50 feet. :clap
They are estimating 40,000 spectators on the cliffs. There is going to be a live web cast for anybody that wants to watch the carnage. :yikes

Jacob, that second shot rocks!

Sad to hear about the spectators this morning. Sounds like the stage area was set a little too close to the water and was hit by a wave? I'd heard a couple of folks were injured and injuries were broken bone type.

Great shots. Man do I wish I was there shooting mavericks. Instead I got to shoot some waist to chest high waves in Florida.

Great shots Jacobovs they all work but #2 is my favorite. What lens did you wind up with?

What boat were you on? You had a great angle and the weather cooperated

I got nothing. I treated myself to a civilized cappuccino before getting my 11:00 boat (it was a mistake). It's really hard to get anything when you're over the side for 3 hours

Got any more you would like to share?

Heard some stories about the spectator washout, wow. A vendor had a multiple flat screen setup that got washed away entirely. Broken bones etc.

I went on the one you recommended "the Queen of Hearts". There were quite a few people with sea sickness issues on my boat too! I kept the stomach empty, my eye on the surfers and stayed on the least rocky part of the boat. that combo kept me ok. I actually felt a tiny bit sick only after I returned.

I heard about the spectators but I did not see anything. I'm not sure where it was.

I'm going to post a separate thread with a bunch.

Thanks for the compliment on # 2 it's one of my Fav's

I used the 400mm f2.8 almost exclusively. I had the 70 - 200 and never used it.

After having such a lousy day @ Mavericks, I went to Steamers today. I mean a good swell is such a terrible thing to waste (fortune cookie in Santa Cruz)

Great shots all.
I seen the news of the spectators and stage crew getting hit by the waves.
I wonder how many cameras met there end. I seen one guy being put on the stretcher still holding his camera. Ouch.

Note to self get that insurance form sent in.
