#1 is not a silhouette to me, but is a wonderful image. Can you darken the cactus? Also, I suggest trying a square crop to eliminate the right side (unless you are using that to be the silhouette, in which case I do not think it is strong enough). If you can turn it into a silhouette, this is probably the strongest image.

#2 is the best for the challenge as it is the best silhouette shown. #3 is a great sky, but seems to miss on the placement of the right cactus.

I am going with #2 for challenge worthy. 1 is good but no silhouette

3 is as rainbow said nice sky to bad there was not more of the cactus bodies showing if you do not look hard they look like fence post

Your subject doesn't have to be completely black to be a silhouette.
1 is very cool. Crop about an inch of the left side of the photo to take the cactus out of the center.
Fix the color on the moon to get that green out of there.

The photo does not work near as well in the edited version you posted.
The cactus needs some detail and the green color in the moon, plus at that close a crop it loses detail.

2 is also very nice, that one works as is.

3 not so much, for me.

Hey Dan...I like 1 but the edited version has some extra bits of mask layer I can see over on the left and up in the right corner top.

Another way to do the darkening without mask is to use the burning tool. Not sure which program you are using but if its cs or psps they both have this feature. I have in bridge (cs4) used a tool that can do burning, dodging, sharpening, brightness control...ect all in one. The name of it excapes me but its up in the top toolbar. You can put your brightness on -100 and burn in the cactus. That way getting a softer glow around the edges of the catus to indicate and outline of light or silloette. Just a suggestion friend.

Some think a silhouette must be black, and others think it is OK to have features. I found this in wikipedia, for what it is worth.

"A silhouette is a view of an object or scene consisting of the outline and a featureless interior, with the silhouetted object usually being black. The term was initially applied in the 18th century to portraits or other pictorial representations cut from thin black card."
