What makes it worth so much money? The old one was famously sharp.
    If not now, when?

Hopefully the newer version has better edge/corner performance and improved stabilization capabilities. I have not seen reviews to confirm this however.

The current version retails for $1699.00

Why in the world would Canon expect anyone to pay $800 more for the new version ...unless the IS offers 8 stops of compensation?

I wonder how much exchange rates factor into the new pricing.

A primary rule of marketing is to remember that if the market does not pan out at a high product price, you can always decrease the price to meet the market opportunity.

If you bring a product to market at a too-low price, it's awfully hard to charge more very quickly.

Add in the R&D costs for the new lens and that "newness" appeal, and you have your answer. Canon will probably reduce the wholesale cost in a couple of years, or the cost will effectively depreciate as a result or inflation.

I have personally not needed the IS features so I still own the original Canon EF 70-200mm, f2.8L USM. I appreciate it even more just now. clap.gif

What is with this fluoride element? Is this something new? Better? Seems like a pretty sweet lens really with it's changes. Dunno about the price tag though...

Probably a great deal since the US$ is now at 89 yen. It was only a couple of years ago that the US$ was at 115 yen.

For comparison, I bought my EF100-400 L on Amazon in late 2007 for $1310. It lists there today for $1610... a difference of $300.

Be thankful though, because Canon's equipment bought directly in Japan is anywhere from 7-20% higher than the US, even in Akihabara which is the electronic wholesale district in Tokyo. (Used to get GREAT deals there... no more).

If the dollar continues its decline, we are likely to see FAR higher pricing for Asian products shortly.. and I'm buying more of my wish list NOW before an inflation explosion and dollar collapse. ( I travel extensively throughout Asia and see the writing on the wall already)

"Fluorite" (calcium fluoride CaF2) is a rather exotic formulation, soft in composition (it scratches pretty easily unless coated) and specifically used to correct CA in longer focal length lens designs and also correct CA in complicated zoom lenses.

Since fluorite is a crystalline mineral, not a glass, it is also relatively expensive to manufacture and use.

Gotchya. Science lesson here... :-). Thanks for the info. I suppose that's possibly one of the larger reason for the price increase?

Canon L-glass has been using flourite for some time now.

I didn't think the 70-200 2.8 IS USM version had it though, is it not new to the II version?

According to the lens diagrams in Canon's Camera Museum, the both non-IS and IS versions of the EF 70-200mm f/4L have a fluorite element, but the f/2.8L models don't.

The same source shows that Canon has been using fluorite for a long time; one of the earliest EF lenses, the EF 100-300mm f/5.6L, released in 1987, has a fluorite element.

This lens is definitely going to be in my bag soon! But... the preorder places like Adorama are quoting the FULL retail price right now, and that dog don't hunt.

I would think that the lens will still probably end up on the market in May or June at somewhere just around $2000, and while I buy a lot of stuff off and on from Adorama, I will boycott them on this lens for no other reason than they're trying to squeeze out more profit from early adopters.

Amazon, B&H, or 47th St likely to debut at the real cost when released.

As Adorama doesn't charge until the item actually ships, if the price has dropped at the other retailers you mention by that time then you can drop me an email to enquire about price matching!
