What a week - First Charles Moore, the great chronicler of the Civil Rights Era. Then, yesterday, we learn that Jim Marshall has made his last iconic image. RIP.

Yes. It feels like the final ending of an era - for photography (he kept all rights to his photos - something that is becoming impossible for pros) and for music.

Joe McNally wrote an interesting entry about Jim Marshall in his most recent blog.

I don't know what to say about this. It's a passing of an era, but it is also a lesson in humility. The willingness to bear witness, be there, not deny your role in the moment, is such a large part of being a photographer. Maybe even the essence.

B.D.'s a pussycat in comparison. :D I read about this yesterday. I bet he had great stories to tell.

    ... I'm still peeling potatoes.

That is indeed a terrific obit. It really is nice to see an honest appraisal of someone for a change: Terrific photographer; producer of iconic images; chronicler of a special time; generous to a fault with friends; seriously chemically addicted; and often a totally crazed, mean, nasty, son-of-a-bitch who you were wise to steer clear of.

I'll add my own, tiny, Jim Marshall nugget:
In the late 90s when I was again getting serious about my photography and was mostly shooting film, I had read that he did most of his shooting with Tri-X rated at 800, which I was doing. So I sent him an email through his website asking him about developers. Lo and behold, I got a response, not from his 'keeper,' but from the Great Man himself, telling me exactly what I wanted to know, answering all my questions. He couldn't have been more gracious or generous.

    And fours and fives and...

The sad reality is that we are at a point in time when those photographers who were at the peak of their careers in the halcyon days of the picture magazines - LIFE, Look, Colliers, etc. - are reaching the end of the line. And those are the folks who had such an enormous influence on the next generation of photographers.
