First Fly Macro

I was leaving the house when I saw this fly on the hood of my truck. I put my finger close to it and it didn't fly away. Told my wife to hold for a few and ran into the house for my camera. Snapped several before the fly got bored and flew off. Some have better detail in the eyes, but I liked the comp of this one best.

Hey everyone, lets post flys here. Doesn't matter if you've posted it before or not, more the better. And I know there are some great fly shots out there. It doesn't have to be a macro either. Swarms are cool

I'm new to macro and find it hard to take pictures of flies since they tend not to stay still for very long. Hence the name fly i guess

Anyway, here is one i managed to capture

Hi Hans,
Can't say that I've ever seen a macro fly with water drops. That's way cool, I like it. You have some very large DOF for a macro, what did you shoot this with?

Well... I guess so:D. The detail you guys get on your macros is amazing. May not be your first, may not be your best, but a damn nice fly all the same. Interesting angle, gotta keep that in mind. I'm busy usually trying to level out these buggers.

That's quite the detail, and the colors...wow! It looks like your reflection in the fly's back. Have you thought about a KOPD for this one?

That looks like one of the V.large hoverflies- Volucella species, they are about 1" long so would not have to be taken so close in.

Nature Smature, this is the cool forum. I'm glad you captured this guy on wood instead of the usual place these stinkers like to play in. The iridescence on this guy is really cool. And no, we don't want you to be left out either:D.

Well, none of us here are fly virgins any more. Though, we haven't been around the block as many times as you.
That's an amazing fly shot. What f-stop did you use?
That's sooo cool, I'm at a loss for words

. I also see that it hasn't played in the doo recently, looks quite clean

I need to do a few (lots) more laps around the block before I produce one like this.

Thanks Chris- first fly taken at F16.
Flies do try to keep themselves clean, most of the time I spot them they are cleaning themselves

Hi Chris!

I have an Olympus c55z and currently have to use the macro function that comes with the camera. Haven't figured out how to set the aperture, shutter, iso etc manually to take a good macro. The flash don't work when i use the macro function, so i have to work on the pictures in PS afterwards because they always gets too dark.

My fly shot was at f5 because that's the best exposure I could get with the onboard flash. I knew the DOF was small but it didn't occur to me to push up the power of the onboard flash and stop that puppy down. Now I just have to remember that next time.

Yes, I too would be continually cleaning if I had a poopy job like them.
