DSS 56 - First Attempts at Panning

So I went out this evening to practice panning.

First I went to the skate park. Many failures and one that might work.

Then I decided I needed to start with something that moved a bit slower and more predictably, so I went to the park.

#4 I met some nice folks.

I also met some jugglers who meet at the park every Wednesday, so I may go back and try again next week. Jugglers are HARD! I don't think these are really on theme, but thought I'd share anyway. No PP on these.

I found this thread about panning technique. http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=138820&highlight=panning Good advice, and I need more practice.

The net is - go when the light is a bit low, so you need a slow shutter speed. Most of these were 1/13 or slower. Center your moving subject in the frame and then follow. After you have followed for a second or two, click the shutter and continue to follow. Practice. A lot!

#5 is a perfect example of panning!

The jugglers would work better if it was darker out (more dangerous for the jugglers though).

I agree practice is certainly part of good panning technique.

I agree--out of these #5 is your best shot of panning.

After panning bikes, panning walkers was hard.

I agree with the others that #5 is the best here followed by #4.
I read somewhere that the best way to get pans with good blur is to shoot at as near to 1/the speed of the object as is possible.

so a car doing 60mph is 1/60s, a person walking is between 1/4s and 1/2s, while an F1 racing car could be as fast as 1/125s to 1/250s.

I like the jugglers. Would it work to raise the f stop sufficiently? I bet you'll get good pictures of walkers, though, once you have more practice, too. The eye and colors are there.

I like #5 also - the subject is clearer than the other shots. You seem to be getting the hang of it - good luck!
