Orton Mania Warning: Image Heavy

It all started innocently enough. Yesterday I was going thru some 'almost but not quite' images and wondering what sort of reprocessing might improve them when I realized that I hadn't tried an Orton effect in a year or so. So I did, and it felt ok. I did another and it felt a little better. And then it just snowballed and now it's today already and I've got a new folder of wayyyy too many images, all Ortonized. I know they aren't everyone's cup of tea, even for me they're kind of like oatmeal, after I eat it a few times I have to put it away until spring. But I really enjoyed this dose of Orton and I apologize for inflicting it on you all. And I'm also sorry that there are so many images.

Wow, #8 is really doin it for me. the motion blurred flowers and foot hills in teh background are great. That'd be hanging in a frame on a wall if it were mine.

i like the Orton effect for some images, but it definitely isn't for everything. i think of these, #2 is by far the best "fit" for me...

I think that the effect worked nicely in images #1 & #2, but it was "too much" on the others..

Sometimes, Orton really works nicely, and this is a nice series. I like the bird best!

Thanks for looking everybody, I appreciate you taking time to let me know what you think. Special thx to Linda for linking to the tutorial; that's the basic idea and there's a plethora of others out there if you want a slightly different take on it. I created an action that I call 20% Orton, with 20% being the radius in the Gaussian Blur layer. That is almost always too much but since I have the action merge to a single layer I just adjust the opacity of that layer until I'm happy. 12-15% is where it usually ends up. Then I mask out areas in the image that I don't want effected (the bird's eye, the center of a flower, the word 'zipper' etc.) and call it good.

John, you win the 'my daughter thinks you have impeccable taste' award because that's her favorite of the bunch as well. It was a wonderful evening to shoot those flowers, very windy. The Orton really kicks the colors of that one up to 11, too much for me. I'm going to tone them down some and see what happens.
