Was at B&H today and shot the D7000 and D3100 and used my SD card, shot both cameras at ISO 6400, will post images tomorrow. The D7000 feels so good in your hands, and is very smooth. D3100 is very nice as well, but feels like a downgrade from the D90 I use currently.

That's because it is a downgrade ;~). Was the D7000 for sale? I thought they were gonna be pretty hard to get before Christmas.

Yeah, the 3100 is to replace the D40/40x/60 line.

The Nikon D3100 sells new for around $640USD with the kit lens. It would be considered an entry level camera.

The Nikon D7000 sells new for around $1600USD with its kit lens. It would be considered an enthusiast/prosumer camera. It is generally considered an upgrade to the D90.

    Yep, and the D3100 is a continuation of D40, D40x, D60, D3000...
It is a great starter cam and the IQ just keeps improving in that line...

They had one d7000 for sale when I walked up to the counter. I went to go put the order in for my new bag (Lowepro all weather 650) and went back to the counter to shoot sample images with the D7000 and they had sold out of the one they had. It was about 15 minutes. It felt REALLY good in my hands...I downloaded the images I took at ISO 6400 and looked at them, I was pretty amazed at the lack of noise. Unfortunately, saving for that D700 (or successor).

Does it feel significantly different from the D90? Judging only by printed dimensions, it seems like the two bodies should be very similar.

The feel I'm talking about is the feel of the camera and how it responds when you press the shutter...There is a smoothness with the D7000 that isn't there in the D90 and a completely different sound than the D90. Of course, I didn't hold it for an extended period, but I have the grip on my D90 so there's a completely different feel there.

Ah, I see. I know what you mean, then. My D90 has more of a "snap" vs. my D300's "clunk." I played with a D300s at a shop once, it felt very nice, better than my D300. I wonder if that's due to the age of my D300 (I bought it used with ~50k actuations). I'm afraid to sample a D700 or D3/x/s because I'm sure I'd fall in love with the sound/feel of the shutter (among many other things).

I wouldn't touch the D7000 if I were you, as it feels more like the D700 than the D90.

rolleyes1.gifGood advice, thanks! Although my wallet would not tolerate any serious considerations anyway (much less my wife!). I am interested in the D7000 more in terms of what it likely means for a future D400 (or D500 by the time I can afford a new body). Several months of shooting with my D300 has led me to the position where the D90's size just feels awkward for me now as compared to the larger D300. I'm sure the D7000 is an awesome machine, but I'm not (yet) in any way feeling limited by my D300, so my gear lust is much more aimed at glass than bodies for the time being.

We have the D7000s now -- it feels and operates more like a D90 than a D300.

I wnet from the D300 to the D7000 it does act a lot like the D300, just different control layout. AF is much the same just a few points. It feels body wise like the D90 which I have only held in stores the size and weight is pretty close to the same. I miss the controls of the D300 but that is just because that was what I was used to. I like the D7000 a lot. Today I was able to get a extra battery finally. My local shop just got them in along with the new grip. Ouch they are very proud of them 72.00 I bought one there instead of online because no one else is showing them in stock.
