What to charge?

I shoot high school sports for a local newspaper and have started getting a lot of requests for my photo's from parents. I'm not a professional photographer and usually just give the jpg's away for free, (although I'm usually asked how much I charge) but it would be nice to re-coup some of my expenses. Any suggestions on what I should charge for a high res jpg with post processing?

There are so many variables in your question like what class of sports, what type of parents (rich?), whether you want to print immediately, etc.

I would take a straightforward approach and ask the parents what want exactly and what they think it is worth to them. You will be surprised that most people will tell you honestly.

My question, do you have the rights to sell those photos on the side, since your working for the newspaper? You might not want to bite the hand that feeds you. mwink.gif

And even if you do, good luck with trying to charge now, since you've been giving them away for free. rolleyes1.gif

The paper doesn't pay much and they were actually the ones that told me that most of their photographers make most of their money by selling photo's to the parents on the side. It's actually been the parents that keep telling me that I should be charging something, so I don't think that will be a problem. In fact I currently have a few opportunities in the works.
