    What the...what caused such a long rupture in the left sponson in the second pic? Explosion? Can't imagine another boat hit the boat on fire...glad the driver got out OK

    Went to the website of the TV station logo in the video. Turns out that the driver is a championship-caliber veteran, and also interestingly, one of the very few women in the sport.

    I think it would be fair to describe that test as a Failure.

    And what was with the driver?
    She swam away from the thing like she was tied to it. Hardly put any distance between it and herself at all.

    Looking at the way the thing initially backfired then the fire and explosion, I'd guess the thing dropped a fuel line. This would have caused the thing to lean out and backfire igniting the spilt fuel that was still probably being pushed by an electric fuel pump which caused the vapour that had leaked into the sponson to detonate and the fire to grow.

    That boat would be one stinky pile of mess to clean up.

    Best shots I have ever got of powerboat racing have been the mishaps.

    The video I saw on my local TV it did look like she was tied to it. There was what looked like a black strap coming off her back. I see in the above links video that she slips out of something black while swimming. Wonder if she was hooked to a chute or something?

    Good arguement for shooting in manual, versus AP(which the OP used) or SP. 3 shots of the same scene. 3 different exposures; 1/640, 1/800, 1/1000.

    Not to hijack, I sometimes shoot in AP. But only in inconsistent lighting conditions.

    Sorry, I'm not getting it. Why is this a good argument to shoot in manual?

    I have been wrestling with this whole AP vs Manual thing lately. Actually went to a workshop about it last night. Please expound, what are you seeing that indicates 1 is correct and the other 2 are underexposed. When I look at them they all look fine.
