So, my CS5 is not allowing me to do a couple of things:

1. When I select the rectangular marquee from the tools on the left, even though I have clearly selected rectangular, once I have made my selection and let go, it immediately changes into an eliptical marquee.

2. I am working on images that I have scanned with my Nikon Cool Scan (finally found the correct cord and software to get this thing up and running - yay!!!), and when I'm trying to make adjustments, several options are grayed out, for example - selective color, channel mixer, and a couple others.

The files I'm working on are jpg, so I'm not sure what's happening, whether it's the way I'm outputting the files from the scanner, or if something is malfunctioning with PS.

Any ideas or advice are welcome.

PS - I answered one of my questions. I ran one of the files through LR, and when I open it in PS, everything works fine (well, except that marquee thing).

    Check under Image > Mode and make sure you're in RGB.

    Are you working with 16bit images, or 8 bit, Sara?

    Some tools in PS are not available in 16 bit images, and scans are usually done in 16bit tiffs or something.

    It isn't bit depth. Selective color and channel mixer are available in 16-bit.

    Hi, Jim - that must be it. I'm not sure, yet what my scans are producing, am still sussing out VueScan (I'm deliriously happy about having found a program that enables me to fire up my LS-30 again).

    Any ideas as to why I can't get my rectangular marquee back? This was an issue even pre-VueScan.

    Check your feather dimensions when you use the Marquee tool.

    Reset your feather to zero, and see if you still have trouble.

    We all these problems from time to time and it can be extremely exasperating.

    I am going to recommend Adobe ship a bottle of Scotch with every purchase and label it for emergency use only. :D

    I think such a tool is too useful to restrict to emergency use. 1drink.gif
