#2 is better composed, but frankly the shadows are so indistinct that it's not clear what is going on-- I half-imagine the person on the left is a beret-wearing large nosed muppet facing right, which I know is not correct.
I'm not quite sure the sun is a contributing factor to the image
Sorry, Rags, but this one just doesn't work for me. Not sure what it is or what's going on. Second one is better in terms of the light, but...Far better idea than execution. Sorry.
Rags, the problem though is that the Sun does not matter much, nor is it a HDR issue. The silhouettes are too indistinct. It's not "all about the lights" :-)

I'll echo this as well, rags. I've been told many times by my photographic superiors that it is very important, in your everyday (i.e. not trying to achieve the look of an amorphous blob) silhouette, that it be a clearly defined subject. We should be able to tell man/woman, height, size, even the turn of the head perhaps.
Truth be told I didn't pay much attention to the couple, I was experimenting with their silhouette in the sun wash with the sun in frame & without. Pretty difficult shot with a triple stop lineal GND.
I was on my way to shoot a moonrise (which worked) at the Marin Headlands, stopped to do some skateboard shots - none of the sunset shots worked (DR too hi). I had a good day (excluding this shot)

The light leading away is more complete to my eye in that image

The high dynamic range made this a tough shot to make good. The black on my monitor looks horrible.
I was curious of the sun contribution

Again thanks for the look ins and the comments
