DIY ring flash kits - anyone here use these?

I want a ring flash but I dont want to spend a couple hundred $$$ right now, so I thought I would see if there was a good DIY kit online that I can make myself, and for some reason all the results seem to show this kit:

Its only $25 plus $10 for the bracket, but it seems wrong to "buy" a "diy" kit.
but all the reviews seem to indicate that this is a good one. I thought I would see if anyone here has heard of this.
The "expensive" one that I was looking at on ebay was about $150 and has to be plugged in and uses a high watt light bulb, so it requires a fast lens and a high iso to be used with portraits.
So this thing is pretty tempting if it works as good as the reviews say.

#11 looks interesting, fiber optics. not sure I want to dedicate my lens hood to that though.
