Mini-Challeng #137 - At Work

The theme for Mini-Challenge #137 will be "At Work".
I don't see where this has been a previous Mini-Challenge.

I'm hoping for images that show an individual engaged in
their work, but it could be "individuals". Those of you who
don't like photographing people could expand the theme
to a working animal or machine, but my bias will be in seeing
strong central figures in a work environment.

I think the concept of a competition like this is to get people
to go out and find a subject that matches the theme and
photograph it, but archive shots are OK. If your images are
"fresh", tell me and I'll slip you some extra credit.

The Mini-Challenge will run about two weeks and close on
Wednesday, February 29th at midnight EST. The usual pack
drill of one to three entries per person embedded in a single
post, no restrictions on color or post-processing, and a
suggested max width of 800 pixels.

Power goes to my head, so I will comment on most or all entries
at the end. If you don't want comments about your photo, tell me.

Here's the general idea, but do better than this:

I own a land surveying company that specializes in oil and gas gathering. Every now and again I get myself out in the field to check on the crews and do what I really love and take photos! I caught up with this crew just as the light was getting good. I loved the cows roaming around behind them!

The pipeline company was boring a hole under a county road for the gas pipe. My crew is locating the bore holes and connections as they are being built using real time kinematic surveying.

I apologize for the slightly larger size...I'm having some issues with bringing this image down to the limits and keeping quality reasonable. I've jacked something up because I've saved it before as a smaller image, but it was slightly different edit I didn't care for as much. Mini-Challenge #137 - At Work - Winners
Several things struck me as I reviewed the images in this
mini-competition. First, quite a few people saw the not-so-obvious
scene as a "At Work" scene. ChrisJ saw a fireman-in-training as a
person at work, Liz saw a dance instructor as a working person,
doob saw break-time as work related, Froch combined musicians
at work with a cameraman doing his job, Up North recognized
that animals work too, and WhatSeeSaw gives credit to politicians
    as workers.

Another thing that struck me is that several of these photographs
are strong candidates as money-makers for stock photographry.
    I can see MarkR's glassblower, GHinson's scallop boat, ChandlerJA's
pipeline workers, Lornece's industrial images, Cuong's three images,
Rockettilly's welders, and bbjones's and chuckin socal's iron workers
used in Annual Reports, company brochures, or travel brochures.

Reacting to something observed in process and catching it on film
(Well, SD card) is something this group has done well. Some of the
photos mentioned have done this, but chuckinsocal's catches of the
firemen and policemen are in this category. Also, ChrisJ's "Precarious",
Billseye's architectural photographer and groundskeeper, and dnie's
    rodeo cowboy.

While this mini-competition was theme-driven, good composition of a
really interesting subject always trumps any other requirement.
GHinson's painter and flower-arranger have strong interest factors.
Doob's man on a ladder is a great catch, but a bit weak because of
that white vehicle as an eye-grabber. Quincy T's paracommandos is
probably the most unique grab, but the image has lost some of the
dynamic appeal in the processing. Photo-funtasia gets my "I wish I
would have caught that scene" vote with her church painter.

OK...on to the choices for top spots.

First place, and next time's theme-selector, bfjr's sculpturer.
It's got interest, the right composition for the subject, color, and even
capture of flying flakes of stone. While not a runner-up, I have to
compliment the processing and use of shadow in the image of the
    woman at the sewing machine.

Runner-up, and a whisker away from First Place, is Syncopation's
"London". The placement of the WPC is just right. Syncopation
found a way to photograph one of the world's most photographed
sights with a new and different perspective.

Right behind that is Photo-funtasia's church painter.

    Thanks to all submitters.
