* Expressions are _really_ important.
* Watch out for people wearing sunglasses. Might be cool for a fashion shoot, but perhaps not so much with a family unless the person is blind or something and never takes off their sunglasses.
* Watch out for camera tilt. It is almost always better to keep things horizontal. Especially when starting out.
* Take time to carefully think about family poses and what they communicate. Not posing correctly can leave a viewer with a feeling of "disconnectedness."
* Fill flash is your friend.
* Everyone has their own style. For me personally I like it when that style is applied consistently. Changing styles every few shots leads to a lack of unity.
* Watch out for odd background things that break up an otherwise even look. They distract the eye.
* Pay attention to hands/arms, etc.
* Watch the focus and camera shake.
* Watch the DOF. Blow it out when it needs to be blown out. Make it deep when you need it deep.
* Light backgrounds usually lead to a number of problems.
* Skin tones are quite important. Be sure your WB is correct, and consider calibrating your camera/monitor. Beyond that, you may need to warm or cool skin depending on look/feel.
* Watch out for regions of inconsistent contrast.
* Be careful of aspect ratio changes. That might lead to issues for clients down the road.
