Just a few photos of my nieces and nephews taken today during Easter. Shot with my SMC Takumar 55mm F1.8 at F4 (I love that lens!) and new (to me) K20D.

    Cute kiddos and nice impromptu shots...
    55MM fast glass is something of an oddity for Nikon but on an APS-C sensor that's very close to my favorite prime at 85MM..
    On the posed shots I would have moved them to a shaded area though :D

    Like the movement in #4 (you may want to number them to make it easier for us to refer to them) but would crop it differently. I would crop to about a 1/3 off the right side, a little off the bottom and top to put the boy in the lower third of the image.

    Agree with Rey on moving the posed shots to the open shade to avoid the dappled light. Another option is to hold a scrim or something to block the dappled light.

    Thanks guys for the pointers. I never shoot portraits, so I have a lot to learn. I'm more comfortable shooting wildlife and landscapes, which is a totally different ball of wax compared to people shooting.

    Keep the pointers coming! I'd like to get into more portrait/street photography as I really like what I see in many of these types of images. Pointing my camera at family is fine, but I'll have to work up the nerve to start shooting strangers.

    My brother put it to me the simple way. When framing the subject, give it some place to go.
