Mock Magazine Cover

Was wanting to add fake magazine covers to my arsenal. Plain-jane photos just don't seem to sell well. The idea is to take a photo and make it appear as its the cover of Sports Illustrated, Racer, Super Karts Illustrated, etc.

I can figure out HOW to do it easy enough. The real question here is, is permission needed? If so, how to get it? A quick google search did not readily show any places to get/buy templates pre-made either.

My guess would be that probably wouldn't be kosher with SI and the rest of the magazines. But I have no real idea.

Just as a thought though, maybe you can make a fake magazine cover? That way you wouldn't have to worry about the copyright issues.

Fake Copies would be protected by copywrite and not alllowed, but puns and parody may be allowed by copywrite law.

You will want a formal opinion about this if this is going to be a commercial venture though. Large firms will have a legal firm on retainer to discourage this and you do not want spend a lot of time and money fighting them, even IF you are in the right.
