My sincere thanks to everyone who participated in this mini challenge. I have enjoyed seeing the many different interpretations of light painting. I was even inspired to make a few attemps of my own at spinning steel wool after looking at submissions from PedalGirl and davev. Selecting a winner for this mini challenge proved difficult, as there were many fantastic images. Please keep in mind that the outcome of this challenge is based solely on my opinion, and on any given day, I may have easily selected a different image as my top choice. So, without further ado, let me begin with the honorable mentions:

DsrtVW, Barn with Spotlight
What really draws me to this image is the contrasting colors. Cool image!

Cambyses
I'm impressed by the way you were able to capture the stages of the arm movement while still keeping the arced light source smooth and the face in sharp focus. Well done!

billseye, Vibrations

As a guitar player who also owns a Seagull, I'm especially drawn to this image. I like the way you've included the patterns in the rug to create an interesting background for the guitar. Nice work.

TravelnLass, Dangling Colors

This is an entrancing image that brings backs memories of the spirograph I had as a kid. Sorry we didn't get to see what you were able to do with the plastic bags and flashlight.

Keller3778, Half the man I used to be

Welcome to Dgrin. There is lots of knowledge to be gained and fun to be had here. This image is my favorite of your submissions. It is well executed. I like that we are able to see nothing but the chair on the one side and the person clearly on the other. There is an eerie quality that makes this look like it belongs in a Stephen King movie. Well done.

3rd place: dlscott56, Blending some light
I like how you not only lit the blender, but also used the light to convey the sense of motion.

2nd place: davev, After Dark
I really enjoy the fluid lines and the clean simplicity of the image. I can't think of a cooler use for a cell phone.

1st place: PedalGirl, Light painting Literally
This image stands out above the rest to me, because it is obvious that you had a creative vision and you were able to execute that vision flawlessly. I'd love to know what you used to create the brush strokes. Very nicely done.

Now I pass the "torch" to you (pun intended) to create mini challenge #158. Congratulations.
Mini-Challenge pointers:

I've gotten more milage out of that photo! Thanks for the kudos! A lot of great images for this challenge, so I'm honored.

I actually created this image for the DSS Challenges a while back, it's now placed first twice! This was a composite of 3 images done in the dark. For the brush strokes I took a small torch and made a foil snoot that was the same width and thickness as the brush and pointed it towards the camera, but not directly at it, as I made the strokes. I painted the can and paint brush with the torch in separate shots. Lots of trial and error of course, but the best of each piece made it to the final composite.

Will have to think of a new theme... will get one posted later on this evening.

Definitely a most amazing image PedalGirl. Clearly it took both imagination and ingenuity (a foil "snoot", eh?) along with lots of persistence and determination.

But I'm curious - having precious little experience with such, what exactly do you mean when you say it took "3 images" / a "composite"? Do you mean 3 separate photos, that you then sandwiched together in PS?

I actually can't take complete credit for the snoot idea, I've seen several tutorials that showed how to do it with a paint brush. So, I thought I'd try it... I just took it a step further than I had seen before using bigger strokes and adding the paint can... which amazingly enough I had hanging around the house. I had painted my dining room and one of the cans never made it to the trash with the others.

Yes, actually 4 images if you count the completely black shot I took for a clean background. The 4 shots were opened as layers in PS CS6. I then used a combination of the lighten blending mode on the upper layers and layer masks in order to use just the parts of each layer that I needed and to do a little bit of image clean up. Here are the individual images:

Once I had the image put together I pulled it back into lightroom and did some color adjustment and that was it.
